I deliberately left the bit about Bitcoin in my #Cypherpunk Manifesto article. I’d copied it and included a link to it. It was addressed to the W3 crowd on Nostr, who see Bitcoin as the savior. Here, Bitcoin is seen as the Antichrist, facilitating the rise of fascism. Both are oversimplified analyses. That’s why I’d been hoping for a discussion, as I’m not entirely sure myself.

However, both #Thiel and #Musk made their fortunes through predatory platforms, mainly via #PayPal. The most horrific things in the world happen because #BlackRock and the like speculate on food. Because the military-industrial complex is flooding the world with weapons. All without Bitcoin or crypto. There’s also the Bitcoin Africa movement, which simply doesn’t fit into the ‘scammer-hater’ narrative.

Nevertheless, I think that as long as the world is ruled by #money (and it will be for a long time to come), it’s better to have decentralized money than #centralized money managed by states or companies. In Germany, they say, ‘Money doesn’t stink’. With money, you can buy flowers for your loved one or weapons to fight the enemy.

The dollar and the euro are ultimately controlled by a select few.. Crypto could, if viewed positively, be #democratic. I think this is a worthwhile discussion.

I'm not that into old vintage tech.. I mean, I can't understand people are into music cassettes again. They sound very bad, they degrade over time, use and temperature... Vinyls on the other hand are almost indestructible: you can soak them and it's just matter of dry them carefully and they will live forever. Bad thing: the vinyl buzz... Some romanticize it. I think it is annoying. And then there is CD: perfection. I know it has a limited useful life, although I got CDs from 1982-1985 totally operative until today.

I use Youtube Music: (YT without ads + music, I think a great combo). And I couldn't imagine myself going back to an mp3 player or some "portable digital music player" for listening on the bus, subway or walking outside (like before). In home, ocasionally I listen to a CD, or a Vinyl.. (I had to sell 90% of my CD collection due to money issues during pandemic), so...

I try to spend less everyday, and subscriptions don't help at all... but youtube, mastodon and YT music is all I consume from internet. And -the most important thing- I just hate advertising (I even worked in advertising and marketing for several years to make a living 🫠).

I removed all my music projects from centralized digital platforms.: they're just on youtube (on their own channels) and bandcamp. I don't know. I think we must distance ourselves from centralized social media, alienation, vice, stupidity, depression and screen addiction, but I can't see myself organizing an iPod as I did almost 20 years ago, listening to sh1tty cassettes or using a battery CD player on the go... well. I've already vented xD thanks for listening!

UpScrolled is apparently built from scratch as a centralized platform, not based on ActivityPub or ATProto. They explicitly state that current decentralized protocols don't deliver what they need for a video-forward app, whatever that means. It's run by Palestinian-Australian developer Issam Hijazi with support from the Tech for Palestine incubator, launched in June 2025. Positioned as an Instagram and TikTok alternative without shadowbanning, with chronological feeds.

UpScrolled saw a massive surge after TikTok's US ownership restructure in January 2026, when Oracle and other US investors took controlling stake while ByteDance retained only 19.9%. Some users accused TikTok of censoring posts critical of ICE under the new ownership, which drove people to alternatives.

Monnett is also built from scratch, centralized, with no federation. Run by Monnet Social SA based in Luxembourg, founded in 2024 by a team of European technologists and activists. It's their answer to surveillance capitalism, GDPR-compliant, hosted in Germany, with user-controlled algorithm sliders and no psychological profiling. Basically the European sovereignty play.

W is the newest one, announced at Davos just days ago. Another centralized platform built from scratch, run by Anna Zeiter, former eBay chief privacy officer. It's legally a subsidiary of We Don't Have Time, a Swedish climate activist organization backed by IKEA, Volvo, Unilever, WWF, and Salesforce. The advisory board includes former German Vice Chancellor Philipp Rösler and Club of Rome chair Sandrine Dixson-Declève. Requires identity verification with photo and ID to combat bots. European-hosted data only.

The name of W supposedly stands for "We" with two hidden V's for "Values" and "Verified" - and they cheerfully admit that W coming before X in the alphabet is "a welcome coincidence". Beta in February, public launch late 2026. Zeiter said the platform would already count as a success if "political Brussels" posts on W instead of X.

So all three are new walled gardens with different policies and ownership, but none contribute to the Fediverse, ActivityPub or ATProto.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

It's #Nvidia (and #Amazon, #Meta, #Microsoft, #Google ) vs #Apple.

Not saying Tim Cook is the good guy, but if we never got Apple custom silicon, we'd all be on thin clients that couldn't compute a meal tip without the cloud.
