  1. Any #ornithologists on here?
    #Bird song identification needed.
Fleeting glimpse of small dumpy bird on a tree near a narrow river running through pasture fields near Winchelsea, East Sussex. Merlin App suggests #CettisWarbler but I know apps are not 100%. Confirmation from someone in the know would be great.

  5. Sweden's #MooseMigration Live Stream makes international news! 😄

"It became, in a strange way, gripping because nothing catastrophic is happening, nothing spectacular is happening," she said. "But something very beautiful is happening in that minute-by-minute moment."

I have heard of #Birders (#ornithologists), but... #moose?... What do you call those watching moose, "Moosers," or simply Swedes? 🤷‍♂️

For over a century, acoustic monitoring has hovered tantalizingly out of reach as a method that would solve #ornithologists’ woes...software called BirdVoxDetect, the result of a collaboration between New York University, the #Cornell Lab of #Ornithology, and École Centrale de Nantes, identifies the bird and classifies it to the #species level. technologyreview.com/2024/12/1 #migration

  8. Hey #ornithologists & #birders, what are we doing about feeders this year with the #H5N1? Normally when there is a local outbreak I take them down— does this year call for anything different?

  9. #Ornithologists discover world's largest #hummingbird is actually two species phys.org/news/2024-05-ornithol

Extreme elevational migration spurred cryptic speciation in giant #hummingbirds pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2313

"The northern population stays in the high #Andes year-round while the southern population migrates from sea level up to 14,000 feet (~4,300 m) for the nonbreeding months. The two species appear identical. But looks deceive—their genomes and behaviors tell a different story."

  16. Yesterday morning, about 04:45, an #Amsel (i.e. a #Blackbird but not the North American one, that is a different species) perched on our balcony (4. Etage). He didn't sing, he gave an address. There were full-on sentences, even paragraphs. It went on for several minutes, quite possibly five minutes. It really was like he was speaking, not singing, but speaking. I have never heard a bird do this before (full disclosure, I am a #bird fan). It was *not* a song, or a bird-song, in any way. It was a speech. A declaration I think. Has anyone experienced anything like this? #Ornithology answers from #Ornithologists are most welcome

  17. Delighted to be featured as part of the new American Ornithological Society #FacesOfAOS series.

AOS is doing amazing groundwork to build an inclusive community and I'm glad to be a part of it.

#Ornithologists don’t fit into a single mold—this campaign highlights the broad spectrum of #AOSmembers, provide opportunities for recognition & connection, & personalize the field of #ornithology.

Excited to see all the cool AOS members who will be featured next!

  18. #Hunters and #ornithologists partner up to end raptor persecution

Despite efforts to tackle the illegal killing of #birds in #Denmark, the illegal poisoning, shooting, and trapping of birds of prey remains a problem in Denmark. But this year, an unusual partnership has been concluded that could turn the tide. #BirdLife Denmark and the Danish Hunter’s association have joined forces to end raptor killings for good. flightforsurvival.org/hunters-
