#DigitalOcean outage on 28-Nov-2024 caused by, perhaps, an incompetent #NetworkSolutions person, followed by equally incompetent clueless #VeriSign executives, none of whom seemed to know how to order a fix to reverse a single mistake made by one person that lead to a major corporation bleeding revenue and reputation.

It took hours and hours, and many VeriSign executives getting involved, just to remove a single erroneous clientHold on a single domain. Really? None of them had any idea which manager to call?

Imagine if Network Solutions accidentally put a clientHold on your domain. You'd have to just kiss your domain goodbye because a lot of VeriSign executives will not be helping you.

Anyone know anyone at #NetworkSolutions ops? One of my contractors can't send me email from their webmail. They get:

A server error occurred with HTTP Status 500. Reason phrase: String index out of range -1

It's been a month and they can't reply to my email. Netsol support won't help them.

If you know anyone there, please have them email me, [email protected]?

Is it just me or #NetworkSolutions is spamming all customers? It’s especially bad since I’ve unsubscribed from their marketing emails (to which I hadn’t subscribed in the first place). What a disgrace.

　起きた。さあ、もうすぐドメインの移管が完了するんじゃないかなと思うんだけ、どどうかな。びっくりするのは、まだドメインの更新時期は2か月後なのに、そしてすでにドメインの移管の手続きしているところなのに #NetworkSolutions から「更新の手続きができない、クジレットカードの登録をし直せ」っていうメールが急に毎日届くようになったこと。やばいはこの会社。

　#NetworkSolutions からもドメイン移管の申請が来ているけどキャンセルしたければ3日後までに連絡せよとメール。事前に調べていたとおり、Authorization Code（Auth Code）の発行に3日、ドメインの移行申請が承認されるまでに3日かかるようだ。まあこれで #ネットワークソリューションズ と手が切れるのなら短いもんだ。

　#NetworkSolutions から #Xserver.ne.jp にドメイン移管の申し込みをした。同時にレンタルサーバーの（お試し）契約もした。事前に問い合わせをしたところ、サブドメインでXserverのVPSを別途契約することも可能なようなので、そこに #マストドン を設置しようかなと思案中。 #Hostdon も楽そうなので捨てがたいのだけど。

　お、 #NetworkSolutions からドメインを移管するためのAuthorization Code （Auth Code）が届いていた。ドメインの移管とレンタルサーバーのお引越しをしよう。

　#NetworkSolutions からドメインを移管するためにAuth Codeの請求をおこなった。カードの明細をちゃんと確認していなかったのもいけないのだけど、とにかく #ネットワークソリューションズ 高すぎ。目ん玉飛び出るかと思ったわ。

　Auth Codeが発行されたらレンタルサーバーもお引越しする予定。まだ6月まで現在契約しているところと契約が残っているけど、もういいかなと。ここ、1回サーバーの事故が起こってデータ飛んだりしたのよね。数年前には事業譲渡で別会社になったりで、引っ越そう引っ越そうと思いながらずっとそのままになっていたので、今回サブドメインでマストドンを運用しようと考えて重い腰を上げることができたのは本当にいい機会だなと。

　マストドンのインスタンスを立てるにあたりドメインの移管を考えているのだけど、ドメインをとってもうすぐ21年になるみたい。

　じつは去年、クレジットカードが不正利用されている可能性があるといってカードが再発行になったのだけど（そしてそのことと、以下の #NetworkSolutions とは無関係ではなかったのだけど）、ちょうど1年ぐらい前にドメインの更新がうまくできていなくて、あんまりメールが来るもんだから久しぶりにNetwork Solutionsにログインして状況を確認したら、ドメインの管理費・更新料を目ん玉飛び出るぐらいバチクソ取られていたのよね。去年は1年間42.99ドルで5000円ぐらい。

　以前はそんなに高くなかったのだけど、自動更新でずっとほったらかしにしていたのでこんなに値上がりしていることに気づかなくて、かなりショックだった。

　だから、もともとドメインの管理はどこか別のところに映したいなと思っていたところだし、ちょうどいい機会だなと。以前は #ネットワーク・ソリューションズ といくつかぐらいしかドメインとれるところがなかったんだよなあ。

What’s an Internic handle?

Back in the mid-90s, there was only one place to register a domain name. (See Network Solutions.) To register a domain, or to make changes, one sent a specially formatted email message to a special email address at Network Solutions. On the receiving side, a program would read the message and follow the instructions. To verify the request was valid, the program checked the message for a valid InterNic handle.

To obtain a handle one would register with the Internic by sending a formatted email message containing your name, address, and other contact information. The InterNic software would then create a globally unique handle in response. Some program back in 1994 saw my initials and added 1315 — cc1315.

I never managed to figure out the source of the 1315. If memory serves, the handles were always two initials and three or four digits. So my best guess has always been that the digits were the local time-of-day when my registration was received.
