For tonight on @damagecontrolblog, I wrote about why I migrated away from Hostgator, how their service has gotten worse, and how migration turned into an ordeal. Long story short, avoid HostGator if you can.

Geek Babble – Snapping at HostGator
I finally complain about HostGator as a company, and recall my migration to a better web host earlier this year.

Wouldn’t it be much faster to ask the customer to back up their claim—as Hostinger, 20i, Hetzner and others have done?
Do I really have to teach #Hostgator how to enforce their own AUP? -
Seems #Hostgator—who is normally really good at DMCA—is having trouble with a #disinformation report. For some weird reason it’s been referred to the domain name registrar who has nothing to do with my complaint. And the registrar is challenging me to prove my complaint.
I put it to them: how do you prove that something is disinformation?
I said: if I accused you of sending spam, how do you prove to me that you don’t? By sending me all your email logs? -
To #hostgator.in:
You're hosting a compromised site, with phishing content. (URL included)Hostgator: we can't see any phishing content. Send us a URL and a screenshot.
To Hostgator: The compromised site is probably disregarding certain IP ranges to evade detection. Here's the screenshot, and URL again.
Hostgator: we can't see any phishing content. Please send us a URL and a screenshot.
(rinse and repeat.)
Fucking annoying when hosting companies don't take their responsibilities seriously.

How it started: "Why did my site's IP address change without its DNS being updated?"
How it's going: "Why did you delete my old server without notifying me, without performing a fresh copy to the new server, without taking a backup, and without updating DNS?"
-
I can almost hear the usual horrified cries of "But you CAN'T host an email server without being a technical genius and still get through to Gmail!" 😱
Meanwhile, I'll just continue doing exactly that. (Yunohost using a VPS not hosting a million spammers, fyi. Rather easy - just follow the instructions and avoid the usual big box, cheap ass #VPS's like #HostGator, #GoDaddy etc).
Oh and yes, I have no problems with Gmail, Outlook etc.

Wonderful. It appears that Hostgator is going to fleece me again. The hosting costs for The Ice Cave have already jumped from $10 per month to $25. Now because my previously unlimited storage plan is no longer exists, rates are going to rise again in May.
Who doesn't love paying more for less with worse service? Including tons of downtime!
I'm in the process of transferring my domain to a new registrar. Once that's done, I'm transferring the site to a new host.

Many of my former #HostGator colleagues were #fired today after they tirelessly worked to consolidate the #WebHosting brand (along with other #NewfoldDigital brands) onto a single platform.
I foresaw this after a year under the new company, which was created from Web.com’s “merger” with #EnduranceInternational’s web presence division (HG, #Bluehost, etc.)
Believe them when they say you’re just keeping the lights on—it’s only a matter of time before they cut your power.
-
Hostgator is increasing prices on my shared-hosting plan by 44% to $9/mo; it is perhaps time for me to change where I'm hosting stuff.

CW: food
@trs @genehack Interesting. #PhillyFlats began as a food truck called #QuakerSteaksi. That’s how I first found them as they would visit #HostGator when I worked there: https://www.phillyflatskaty.com/aboutUs.html
The #cheesesteaks then were great. If anything, they were better when I went to the restaurant.
The truck still does #catering events and stops by #Houston #brewpubs like #NoLabel:

Wow, the non-profit I've been helping gave me access to their #Hostgator billing portal and oh my...
They've been getting billed an extra $110-120 a year on top of a high hosting cost for services that aren't even turned on. If they were turned on, they wouldn't be helping them anyway. 🤦♂️

I've been helping a non-profit with website work and I might have actually found a hosting provider that doesn't rely on cramming servers so full that they grind to a halt.
#KnownHost has provided some pretty decent performance around the clock over the past month and it's night and day compared to #HostGator.
I thought the era of shared hosting was dead but I guess I was wrong!
