So, I was helping a friend, and I needed to move a Workspace subscription from one account to another (it's attached to a Bluehost account in question). #Bluehost

Bluehost's only way to resolve their broken system is to nuke the entire Google Workspace profile, delete every email and delete the drives.

So I need a new domain host. Bluehost ain't cutting it.

Omg I’ve just had to delete all of the bloatware that #bluehost foisted upon my lovely new #Wordpress install. And don’t get me started on their AI site generator. Jeez what a slop factory that is. Can we just delete #AI please?

Decided upon a #domainname for my new blog in record time last night. Selected #bluehost as the host after careful consideration. I used them years ago for another #wordpress site and it’s interesting to see that they’re still highly recommended by http://wordpress.org. Included domain name privacy option and some kind of malware tool in the purchase and after about 30 mins the default Wordpress site was up and running. Really looking forward to building the site.

I *could* just host them all on #WordPress .com but to get plugins and such, I’ll need to pay ~$50 USD / year for *each* site… but for some, I want to just preserve the history… and I don’t know if I can justify $50/year… as I’m up to $500/year for 10 sites.

However, WP .com *does* make it super simple and easy.

Now, I did look at #BlueHost as it *appears* I could host many sites (and domains) for maybe $150/year.

BUT… BlueHost doesn’t support #IPv6 ! In 2025! 🤦‍♂️🤯 Hello???

I'm looking to migrate our website domains to services not owned by google/squarespace, and our web host to something cheaper than bluehost.

It's just a simple wordpress website for a card game, Penguinslap.com. We don't really get any traffic at all. Very occasionally we make a sale, and those links redirect to a PayPal site.

Any suggestions?

Migration from #Bluehost to #Porkbun accomplished for my two personal domains.

Migration steps: set up two glue records that point to my existing DNS servers. End. And maybe also glue the DS records if you use DNSSEC.

I've spent the last couple of years with a service that tried to convince me that there was no way of buying only a domain name and make it point to my mail and name servers in the 2020s. That I *had* to buy the whole package of hosting, Wordpress, Microsoft email and Office 365, even if I intended to use none of those features. And I probably had to thank them because at least they still allowed me to generate my own certificates with certbot rather than forcing me to buy their own, like GoDaddy does.

And in the latest rollout of their UI, Bluehost has also taken care of hiding the DNS configuration panels under 5-6 layers of dark patterns, advanced settings hidden under advanced tabs, pointless warnings that can't be dismissed, and they have even made it impossible to configure your own nameservers.

Then I just walked around the corner, and I found a service that's like "you want a name? Sure. No hosting, no mail, no Wordpress? Sure. You run your own DNS? Sure, just pass the glue records before the transfer is complete. We'll take care of everything else. With no downtime. And with a free API. And for a tiny fraction of the previous bills. Have a nice day".

It feels like enjoying a gourmet dinner for the first time after a couple of years of McDonald's.

PS: I'm getting the message because I'm cancelling the renewal... You wouldn't believe how much they want to just host 1 website...

Back in January 2022, I wrote a dialogue (using fictional characters) explaining why I was moving the NLJ off Bluehost shared hosting to a small VPS server. Nostalgic, and in terms of site performance... definitely turned out to be the correct decision.

Many of my former #HostGator colleagues were #fired today after they tirelessly worked to consolidate the #WebHosting brand (along with other #NewfoldDigital brands) onto a single platform.

I foresaw this after a year under the new company, which was created from Web.com’s “merger” with #EnduranceInternational’s web presence division (HG, #Bluehost, etc.)

Believe them when they say you’re just keeping the lights on—it’s only a matter of time before they cut your power.

Well #bluehost has changed their whole admin panel, and hidden the zone-editor.

No longer under Domains, You need to go to Hosting, select a website -> Settings -> Advanced DNS Editor

Documentation isn't updated so, maybe this will save someone time 🤷

#Bluehost acquired the smaller hosting provider I've been using for about 25 years. They didn't even contact me to inform me they had taken over my domains and websites. Now my sites have been down all morning, and the web-based control panel for my domains is also erroring out. Huge sigh of disappointment, frustration, and dread at the prospect of migrating everything.

Update - it is mod_security. The agent allowlisted the specific inbox URL throwing the 406 error which... Kinda fixes it, for that one account. Tried to get it expanded to cover all URLs under /wp-json/activitypub but they would only do specific URLs.

I'd love it if this could reach a higher-up or engineer at BlueHost.

Does anybody have experience with BlueHost and using the ActivityPub plugin for Wordpress? I strongly suspect that they're using Apache's mod_security to block the "application/activity+json" content type - which means I can't actually follow anything.

Reaching out to their support has been unsuccessful, I thought this would be an easy thing to set up. #wordpress #bluehost #activitypub #fediverse
