Just saw a news piece on the funeral for former 🇨🇦 PM Brian #Mulroney. All positive, people talking about how he recognized groups and countries, how he had a human touch.
He was also a neoliberal, like Thatcher and Reagan. A major reason for Canada's economic and inequality problems of today.
Let's not accidentally rewrite history by being polite. Mulroney is now burning in hell. Remember, if you respect a person, you're creating respect for their legacy!

So former PM Brian #Mulroney passed away yesterday and there hasn't been this much coverage of a public figure on Canadian mainstream media since the Queen died.
He is certainly a notable figure in our history, being the last PM to have achieved over 50% of the popular vote, architect of NAFTA and being instrumental in ending apartheid in South Africa and establishing global environmental regulations that successfully contained the problems of acid rain and ozone layer depletion (imagine a "conservative" wanting to conserve the environment these days!)
OTOH he set the nation on a path towards mass privatization and dismantling of cooperative and other non-market housing initiatives. The reduction of corporate regulation has proven quite damaging, and while intentions were probably good the failed Meech Lake and Charlottetown Accords showed a lack of concern for First Nations and divided the nation leading to the rise of western populism and Quebec separatism...

#Mulroney was also guilty of the classic #GlassCliff treatment of Kim Campbell.
He simultaneously set a prominent woman up for abject failure, and robbed anyone of the opportunity to be the celebrated and successful first female prime minister of Canada in the future.
He gave misogynists a generation worth of opportunities to say "well we tried a woman once, and we saw how that worked out."
