🥂 #OnThisDay in 1975, our institute was officially inaugurated. 🎈🎉 Work had already begun earlier that year, but the official opening ceremony dates to December 5. This year, we celebrated 50 Years Of Climate Research with many people & lots of activities (https://mpimet.mpg.de/en/anniversary/events-for-everyone-looking-back). Thanks to everyone who celebrated with us, it has been a wonderful year! #MPIM50

💫 Yesterday, we celebrated our institute’s 50th anniversary: Around 210 participants gathered for a scientific symposium in the Saalhaus of the Patriotische Gesellschaft. Afterwards, 170 guests from academia, politics, & the public followed the invitation of the #Hamburg Senate to a reception in the City Hall with the Second Mayor Katharina Fegebank & the president of @maxplanckgesellschaft Patrick Cramer. From a fisher’s cliff 🎣 to a climate outpost 🔭: Deebles Point became home to the Barbados Cloud Observatory in 2010 🇧🇧. Perched 30m above sea level on the east coast of Barbados, the site was popular with local fishers casting into the trade winds. In 2024, during the international #ORCESTRA campaign, 141 radiosondes 🎈 were launched there in just 3.5 weeks. For 15 yrs, the BCO has tracked clouds ☁️, aerosols 💧,& winds 💨—contributing to global climate research 🌎. #ThrowbackThursday #MPIM50

👩🏼‍💻 #MPIM's 1st #supercomputer, a CDC Cyber-205, was installed in Hamburg's Geomatikum in 1985. 2.5 yrs later, the German Climate Computing Center #DKRZ was established as a service facility for climate research in Germany. Continuous upgrades enabled substantial progress in the development of realistic #climate models. Today, scientists from #MPIM &other institutes are using the Levante supercomputer, which has 70 million times the computing power of the Cyber-205! #MPIM50 #ThrowbackThursday #tbt

🌊🪣 In 1979, #MPIM researchers conducted hands-on research in the North Sea: #ocean-atmosphere measurements for the calibration of satellites 🛰️& to study exchange processes. 🌍⛴️🛟 Today, observations–by ship, aircraft, or on land–are still a core component of our research. We also use data from the automated PIRATA surface buoy array in the tropical Atlantic, one of which can be seen in the right image. 🛜
