What an outstanding achievement! Using the ICON Earth system model, a team led by #MPIM + #DKRZ successfully simulated the full Earth system at an unprecedented grid spacing of 1.25 km. For this, they received the Gordon Bell Prize for #ClimateModeling, awarded at #SC25. The team also included experts from #JSC, #ETH Zurich, CSCS, #UHH, & #NVIDIA. 👩🏼💻 #MPIM's 1st #supercomputer, a CDC Cyber-205, was installed in Hamburg's Geomatikum in 1985. 2.5 yrs later, the German Climate Computing Center #DKRZ was established as a service facility for climate research in Germany. Continuous upgrades enabled substantial progress in the development of realistic #climate models. Today, scientists from #MPIM &other institutes are using the Levante supercomputer, which has 70 million times the computing power of the Cyber-205! #MPIM50 #ThrowbackThursday #tbt

The meeting was part of a Germany trip in the scope of the introductory seminar for the @HumboldtStiftung's #ClimateProtection Fellows.👩🎓👨🎓 #MPI_scientists presented selected aspects of climate research at our institute. 👏 Exciting news for climate science: #MPIM is among the first users of what will soon be the fastest computer in all of Europe – JUPITER (@fzj)! A corresponding proposal submitted by MPI-M, #DKRZ and #JSC has now been approved. This allows our scientists to push the resolution of a fully coupled Earth system model to just one kilometer! 🌎 🌐 Can you imagine this level of detail?

⬇️ English in the comments! ⬇️ Über 12000 km hat das Team "Max Planck Hamburg" letztes Jahr beim #STADTRADELNHamburg zusammen zurückgelegt - so weit wie nach Neu-Delhi und wieder zurück. 🌏

Today international climate protection fellows of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation from South America, Asia and Africa visited our institute #MPIM and the German Climate Computing Center #DKRZ to gain an overview of selected aspects of climate research. 🌍☁️ 🌊 ☀️

Today, the participants were able to get a close look at Levante, the Supercomputer at #DKRZ.
Levante has been operating since March 2022, increasing the computing capacity at DKRZ four-fold. Its main memory exceeds 800 Terabytes (about 100.000 Laptops) and the computing power 14 PetaFLOPS, which are mainly used for modelling purposes.
