I spotted the #mnt_reform Next laptop on crowdsupply about a week ago and I am really tempted to sign up for one. I love the modular design, the hackability and the georgeous CNC aluminum case. My only real hesitation is that I could get a much faster Framework laptop for the same money. Framework is repairable, but nowhere near as cool as the MNT. Does anybody out there have any experience with the MNT's SOM module, the #RK3588 as a daily driver? I'm a lifelong Ubuntu user. It sounds like Debian is better fit for this SOM, and I don't think I'd mind switching. I do occaisional video editing. Has anybody out there experemented with Kdenlive on Debian (or ubuntu) with the RK3588? Or have an opinion about the MNT laptop?

If someone at @mntmn or from the #mnt_reform community can take a look at this that would help me lots. The SD card reader on my board just doesn't want to read, anything. (I am posting this here because my community.mnt.re account is not approved yet)

#mnt_reform I wrote the .img to a SD card, booted from the SD card, ran reform-flash-rescue to install the image to the eMMC. Then I booted into the eMMC, ran apt update and apt upgrade, and now the SD card reader just won't read. (not sure if related)
I tried booting from the SD card, nothing. The Disk manager says the SD card contents are Unknown and no matter what card I put in, it's always the same. Did the SD card reader just break? Or did the firmware got updated and messed up? I'm so lost and I don't know what to do to boot from SD.

UPDATE: I flashed the latest firmware for the R30 board with the internal usb-c and now it works again!!! I have no idea what or how but now it works.

UPDATE2: It stopped working. Maybe It's a speed problem? Maybe it doesn't like my SD card with adapter? I am going to try with a full-size SD card with no adaptor. It's like, it worked enough to boot but then it went back to READ errors.

UPDATE3: I am going to try booting from USB using reform-boot-config --emmc usb. No idea if that will work but something is definitely wrong with the SD card controller on this. I have no idea of I can fix it. Will ask on mnt community once they activate my account.

UPDATE4: Managed to boot from USB and migrate to Nvme, boot is still on eMMC which is okay. But the SD card slot just won't read properly SD cards even inside the OS, it just gives "Unknown" partition types and trying to read, format, eject... just returns quark 0 error.

One of the things that is great about #mnt_reform is its community.

I just asked a question about u-boot as I didn't understand it and someone kindly gave me a mini tutorial.

Like you don't know what you don't know. But I felt safe enough to ask the question on the IRC channel. This doesn't just improve my knowlege and give me a map to improve further. Other newbies may learn as well.

Plus they will feel safe enough to ask. So we all learn more.

These things make a huge difference.

What will be the main difference between the #mnt_reform and the #mnt_reform_next ? Considering buying a #mnt_reform but then again maybe I should wait for the next?

Not as good as #framework but it is still good to have alternatives.

It's sad to see what's happening on @AsahiLinux , but the project has never made sense to me, apart from the developers having fun of doing it.

#Apple doesn't deserve that effort, it's too close of a company.

My opinion is the best the community does is not support Apple at all, and if someone wants to use Linux, let that person support a company that supports Linux somehow.

I have an #AppleSilicon #M1 and definitely my next hardware will not be Apple's anymore, I'm leaving the ecosystem to support other initiatives.

@mntmn is on my radar... I'm open to suggestions and opinions!

I'm thinking about selling my #mnt_reform for switching to the reform next... original SoM, metal port covers, no issues at all.

Guys when the mnt reform next comes out I’m gonna splurge so hard; but it’s still months (years ???) away :blob_cat_oh_no: #mnt #mnt_reform

After procrastinating for almost 2 months I found the time to write the post about my custom lid for the @mntmn Pocket Reform. It decreases the full load CPU and SOC temperature by 30 degrees while keeping the WiFi functional!
