  3. So I understand the striations in rocks at the beach in New Hampshire come from heating and cooling deep in the Earth: some of them get etched by seawater and you can see flakes coming off

  4. "Bevan started his geological work in #metamorphic #petrology, and his PhD centered on stability of siderite and metamorphism of iron formations in the Minnesota iron range. At a geological conference in Minneapolis[...], Bevan gave a talk about his thesis work there, which attracted a smart lady who was working for an iron-mining company. Two years later they married. Mary Hill French became a close partner in editing [his] manuscripts and joined in all the travels around the world." #geology

  5. From Barb Dutrow, LSU:
...we announce the passing of a metamorphic petrology legend, Michael J. Holdaway on March 21, 2025, at 89 years.

Mike is perhaps best known for his meticulous experiments on the Al2SiO5 system and for developing the andalusite weight loss method for determining reaction direction. At Southern Methodist University his work provided experimental constraints on the triple point of the polymorphs for the first time.

  15. #DogWalkingGeology from a couple of days ago - Spud has found some super sillimanite at Bendoran, as pale knobbly lumps (with a little coexisting pink andalusite) , sticking out of metapelite. These are probably replacements of older, large regional-metamorphic kyanite crystals due to high temperature reheating by intrusion of the Ross of Mull Granite. #Mull #Geology #Metamorphic #Al2SiO5

  16. #DogWalkingGeology this beautiful clean schist boulder on Ardalanish beach shimmers and shines in any available sunshine 🤩 😊 . I've photographed it lots of times, but never quite feel I've got it perfect. This morning's effort is typical 😁! #Geology #Mull #Metamorphic #Moine

  17. #Gneiss boulder

I came upon this stream-polished boulder along the Quinebaug River, just below East Brimfield Reservoir near #Sturbridge, #Massachusetts. Because it has been transported and I just took a photo, I don’t know its origins…but it looks like either the Quinebaug or Marlboro formations, Ordovician and Cambrian, respectively. Laurentia, not Gondwana. Lovely banding, eh? Lens cap is about 4 cm in diameter.

  18. #ThinSectionThursday Not an outstanding science-y rock, but this is my first ever home-made thin section, produced on Tuesday, and the rock is the bedrock to my house in Mull. See the alt-text on the images for fuller descriptions 😊 #Geology #Metamorphic #Bunessan #Microscopy #Mull

  19. It's not often that you see rock trying to pass itself off as Kendal Mint Cake, but these blocks of Carrara Marble cladding Birmingham Bullring's Rotunda are doing a pretty good impression of it.

We're probably(!) more used to seeing Carrara Marbles slabbed or sculpted and then polished, but here the un-dressed face of each piece catches the light. It started life as a limestone, but was recrystallised as marble by heat and pressure - a metamorphic rock, of Jurassic age.

  20. #ThinSectionThursday Here's a wonderful rock (garnet-scapolite pyroxenite, with feathery symplectite intergrowths around the garnets) from the Lewisian metamorphic complex in South Harris, in both plane polarized light, and between crosed polars. The field of view is about 2mm. See ALT text for detailed image descriptions. #Lewisian #Metamorphic #Rocks #Minerals.

  26. My Stepmother has a #countertop that I love. She knows my love of #geology and had a cutting board made for me as their counters were installed.

Wanting to read about the geology of "#Ubatuba granite" I was surprised to discover it's considered #igneous and/or #metamorphic and it's a charnockite, a new term for me. I'll have some reading to do once home!
