Wenn der Dev sich nicht mehr meldet, hielte ich es für ethisch vertretbar, den Blob mittels Ghidra zu dekompilieren und zu kollektivieren. Is anyone ripping BluRays? If so, where did you get your drive?

Drives capable of ripping UHD BluRays (or being flashed to rip BluRays) seem really hard to come by. I don't want to have to pirate everything to be able to enjoy it from my Jellyfin server.

If you have a Buffalo BRXL-16U3 and it uses an LG BH16NS58 with drive platform MT1959, you can flash "WH16NS60 1.02-MK" as mentioned in this post with encryption and makemkvcon from MakeMKV 1.17.7 for Linux (in the binary tar gz, works on Arch right now but haven't updated within a few days) and it'll enable LibreDrive:

Figured it out, it's MakeMKV. The light starts blinking when it's started and stops when it's closed. Going to assume it's polling the disc drive and Linux counts all storage access for the hard drive indicator LED.

I know that physical media is dying, but: why is there no open source alternative to #makemkv? What is so special about BluRay ripping? I know that they are much better encrypted compared to DVDs, yeah. But it seems it IS possible, so why has no one duplicated the effort yet?

Time to put the newly rewritten server into action. Broke out my totally stock firmware LG WH16NS60 drive, and started in on some Bluray TV episode sets. Currently ripping at ~9.2X which definitely helps out.

Think I'm gonna target AV1 via `av1an` and use the `svt-av1-psyex` encoder. Already have the subtitles and attachments though I'll have to offset the subs by 1000ms for everything to work out.

Ich habe bei mir z.B. noch eine ganze DVD-Box mit der MTV-Serie "8th & Ocean", die ich gerne auf den Computer übertragen möchte. Üblicherweise wählt man dazu unter Linux ein Programm namens Handbrake. Handbrake war mir persönlich aber immer schon zu überladen und daher habe ich in der Vergangenheit die Kommandozeile...

This morning I managed to install #MakeMKV from source.

Go me. Compiling from source and I don't normally get on.

It normally results in an error I don't know how to fix.

@vkc nice video. Another thing that brothers me about streaming is ownership. Like you i buy dvd's in thriftstores, rip them with #MakeMkv convert them with #Handbrake and play the movies on the device of my choice. It's a bit cumbersome, but it's mine.

Weil die legale Nutzung durch den Kopierschutz blockiert wurde, bleibt nur eine Lösung: Die Erstellung einer ungeschützten Kopie. Ich nutzte #MakeMKV, um eine MKV-Datei zu erstellen.
Das ist die einzige Version, die auf allen Geräten funktioniert.

Nun habe ich #Handbrake ausprobiert. Ja, einen einzigen Film kann die Software gut rippen.
Eine DVD mit mehreren Filmen scheint Probleme zu bereiten, da die einzelnen Episoden entweder am Ende abgeschnitten sind oder am Anfang. Hat da jemand Erfahrung mit?
Mit #makemkv war das immer problemlos, leider läuft dort das DVD-Laufwerk leer, wird zwar erkannt aber nichts ausgelesen. Ein Jammer um die gute Software....

Zuletzt war #makemkv mein Favorit,- doch heute sehe ich, das funzt überhaupt nicht, läuft leer im LW stundenlang und braucht irgendsoeinen Registrier-Code, der sich andauernd ändert. #DVDShrink funzt nicht wegen irgenwelchen perlGTK2-Geschichten, die dann noch weitere Pakete haben wollen und man nur noch am Suchen ist, wo man das her bekommt. #AnyDVD scheint völlig verschwunden zu sein. #K9Copy ist auch nicht für opensuse KDE auffindbar. Gruselig! Jetzt fummel ich hier rum mit DVDbackup - was super läuft, und Avidemux für Vob-Konvertieren - wobei ich aber keine 7 GB-Dateien brauche.... Wenn jemand einen guten Tip hat, her damit!

Am 28.4.2025 schrieb ich (https://social.amichan.de/@ron/114416637688817778) das mein BD Laufwerk keine UHDs abspielt.

Viele Stunden später und insbesondere ein neuer Rechner, schreib ich demnächst noch was zu, hab ich festgestellt, das mein BD-RE HL-DT-ST immerhin UHD freundlich ist. LG hat mittels Firmware-Update dem Laufwerk die Möglichkeit genommen, UHDs abzuspielen. Mein Laufwerk hatte die Firmware BH16NS55 1.03 und mittels Flash-Programm habe ich die Firmware funktional geupdatet, spricht die Version auf 1.02 gedowngradet. Yay, Denglish, Denglish über alles.

Jetzt kann ich damit zumindest mittels MAKEMKV die UHD einlesen.

Dummerweise hat MAKEMKV aktuell ein Problem: der monatliche Lizenzkey wird nicht erneuert. Also hab ich ein Powershellscript geschrieben, dass mittels Doppelklick und Admin-Rechte-Bestätigungs-Klick das Systemdatum auf ein für den Key gültiges zurücksetzt. Zusammen mit einem Script, dass den korrekten Zustand wiederherstellt, konnte ich meine beiden einzigen UHDs (Perfect Blue und Battle Angel Alita) einlesen.

Der nächste Schritt ist, die Untertitel der deutschen Perfekt-Blue-DVD (liegt schon als MKV vor) auszulesen und in die 4K Version von Perfect Blue einzulesen. Der Vorgang selbst ist simpel. Die Herausforderung wird das Timing sein.

Naja, mal schauen.

On Windows, edit "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts" and add

You'll need to edit the file in elevated "administrator" mode. Easiest is to just edit in notepad++ and it will prompt to elevate when needed.

Picked up a second Blu-ray drive and external enclosure for it, to go along with my external slim pioneer Blu-ray drive. You know, just in case....can't have things breaking on me.

Had to flash the firmware so #MakeMKV could use it, super glad there are people smarter than I who can write that stuff. They make things so easy!

I'm moderately annoyed by the absence (to my knowledge) of a one-click (or one-cli-command) #FLOSS solution to repackage video DVDs to MKV (#Matrioska video), chapters and all. There's apparently #MakeMKV that would provide the service, but it's not (fully) FLOSS.
