  1. Remembering this time four years ago and Luke Jerram's awe-inspiring 'Museum of the Moon' taking centre stage in Durham Cathedral.
The installation, which was some seven metres in diameter, was in place between 13 September and 11 November in 2021.
The surface of the inflated spere was made of a fusion of 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface.
Additional atmospheric moonlight and surround sounds were created by BAFTA and Ivor Novello award winning composer Dan Jones.
I always thought that placing the installation above the cathedral's crossing, between the quire and the nave, was an inspired decision, creating some memorable imagery.

  2. The Sun Inside Cork’s Historic Cathedral

Step inside St Fin Barre’s Cathedral this week, and you’ll be greeted not just by the soaring Gothic arches and intricate stained-glass, but by a blazing sun right in the heart of Cork. The Helios exhibition, a six-metre-wide glowing sculpture by UK artist Luke Jerram, has transformed the cathedral’s nave into a cosmic spectacle for the Cork Midsummer Festival. The installation is more than just a visual treat. It’s a full sensory experience, with detailed solar imagery and a soundtrack of real NASA recordings of the sun. It’s a surreal and awe-inspiring blend of old and new: the ancient spirit of the cathedral meets the cutting edge of contemporary art, inviting visitors to reflect on the power and presence of the sun in a truly unique setting.

The Helios sculpture is built to scale, with each centimetre representing 2,300 km of the real sun’s surface, and features detailed representations of sunspots and solar flares, all accompanied by a soundtrack of live NASA recordings of the sun.

  3. Grey, cold and murky across North East England today, but I did find the sun shining at Seaton Delaval Hall in Northumberland. 'Helios' is an installation by artist/sculptor Luke Jerram.
I first came across Luke Jerram's work some seven years ago at the Eden Project in Cornwall.
Some of his exhibits were created out of glass, but the most eye-catching and arresting sight was a huge giant inflatable E.coli bacterium installation, part of an exhibition that set out to make some of the invisible world around us, visible.
Since then, I've photographed two other of Jerram's inflatable installations, the 'Museum of the Moon' and 'Gaia', both at Durham Cathedral.
'Helios' is currently at Seaton Delaval Hall until 6 April 2025.

  4. @DazeEnd Oh yes, #LukeJerram's Gaia looks to me like another printed balloon in the photos, but seen live it's pretty impressive. Depending quite heavily on the venue, I might add.

  5. Luke Jerram’s “Mars: War and Peace” has arrived in Exeter Cathedral. H and I visited the predecessors (“Museum of the Moon” and “Gaia”) but I have to say that the day’s end light made a difference.

I particularly like the third photo - it looks as though Mars has materialised in the Cathedral like some weird Sci-fi film.

  6. I was very fortunate to be invited to take photographs of #lukejerram's Tribute artwork commissioned by the Royal Liverpool Hospital's Organ Donation and Nephrology teams to commemorate the vital work these teams do, and to celebrate organ donors. This is a brilliant interpretation of the brief, reflecting the comments of many donor families and donor recipients.

  7. The Palm Temple (6 photos)

In 2020, the University of Bristol in Bristol, UK, saw the installation of a fascinating and unique public art piece. Created by artist Luke Jerram, this facility not only boasts stunning visuals, but also offers a bench inside, allowing visitors to sit back and immerse themselves in what feels like a colorful rainbow conservatory. The story behind this art installation began in September 2019, when Luke Jerram was approached by Milan-based production company 3D Produzioni. They requested […]

  8. On Wednesday evening I was lucky to be invited to the official launch event at Chester Cathedral for 'Gaia', an art installation by Luke Jerram. It's fantastic to see a modern, environmental message in such a vast, traditional space, and lots of people found it quite moving.
