Since I had a lot of paperwork to do today I managed to procrastinate by moving my partner's audiobook collection offline (with the added benefit of being able to share the content with chosen family members). This should've been a technical blog post but I am too lazy to have a blog, tried a few times.

Step 1: get your stuff off the audible (which is the content provider for said partner).
In order to do that, we get a program called "Libation": https://github.com/rmcrackan/Libation (huge thanks to @neil for sharing it earlier!).
This program runs on every OS I could find at home (but in my case runs on Debian), its UI is ugly and clunky like something ugly and clunky (the author gives a fair warning about that and I am not the one complaining - I am grateful it works! I am not an UI designer myself, can blame the other person) and does the job exactly as promised. No hiccups, fair amount of various y useful options and it takes a moment to choose the right ones. One can feel it has been done by someone who knows their onions, design aspects aside it is a very nice piece of smoothly working code.
I might help the author later redoing the user interface a bit, once I have some free time, but will not touch anything else. IT WORKS.

Step 2: storage.
Obviously we can store our files on the local computer but that's not the point, innit. I have a QNAP NAS holding a vast collection of our old audiobooks from many different sources, many of them very old digitised tapes first released in Poland many years ago. So I point Libation to merge fresh content with the existing folder structure on NAS. IT WORKS.

Step 3: how to get all that on my partner's phone now?
A tricky one, since on premises that's not a problem but outside our WiFi? Library is too large to simply chuck in on ones phone.
The convergent wisdom of the Internet (that part of it that I tend to lurk in anyway) rightly suggests the AudiobookShelf https://www.audiobookshelf.org/ - at the first glance it IS the thing that I want. But how do I run it on NAS? A bit of a search later I find that it is present on the 3rd party app repository I use anyway: https://www.myqnap.org/
Word of advice: it requires ffmpeg from the same store, as I found out the hard way.
Documentation for this method of installation is next to non-existent, I spent a very frustrating hour trying to figure out what port it runs on, which interface it binds to (my NAS has more than one), etc. And there seem to no obvious way of altering the configuration of the network! Granted, I didn't try to SSH into the NAS and dig there, it's just the UI that doesn't allow. Which is disappointing.
Anyway, in case you follow my steps: interface is the one you defaulted your non-admin WWW traffic to, port is the same as you are pointed to in the browser UI.
To get that out into the world you need to forward said port to the said interface and having a static IP on it helps, of course. Static or unchanching, whatever floats your goat.
If you have non-static IP with your provider, as majority has, QNAP offers you nicely working DDNS service via their cloud ID thing. Your device address would be <your-qnap-device-name>.myqnap.cloud or similar pattern. You can find it in the details of your device on their cloud service. It's free.
What is not free is the SSL certificate. You can pay up for the privilege, or you can use http. Audiobookshelf doesn't care.
One last thing you probably would like to do with AudiobookShelf is to setup unprivleged users for evey person you intent to allow to connect to your server. That's done in browser UI itself, is very straightforward with a few auth options available. I didn't try 3rd party authentication so do your homework, I just did user/password pairs, restricted them from doing changes, enabled explicit content for adults and disabled that for minors. IT WORKS.

Step 4: mobile app.
I detest Android almost as much as I detest "everything needs to be in browser" mindset, so can't tell how AudiobookShelf's beta own app works. Their Apple Store beta is full and can't be accessed too.
So I went with another 3rd party free app, a thing called "Plappa" https://plappa.me/ - the author will receive donation as this thing is exactly what one might need. It connected to my own server over the internet, itself it's simple no-nonsense thing that does one job and does it well. AudiobookShelf also recommends it as one of the 3rd party apps for use with their server as "audiobookshelf enabled". Rightly so. Check their recommendation list, seems to be worth it. More importantly: IT WORKS

And now I am going back at looking at Libation's progress at liberating a few hundred audiobooks. And will consider if I want to chip in with import from Audioteka, which I always did using Python...

Here in #Oregon we’re lamenting the twilight of #CraftBeer with the state-wide closure, multiple locations, of one of the best known breweries in the #PNW - Rogue Ale. They had really neat facilities, with great food, ambiance, and a brewery onsite. It appears they mismanaged their finances, but the transition away from traditional brews, beer and wine, to other beverages by the younger generation also may have played a part.

Only time-wasting, mistreat-the-user part came from the (industry standard) lack of adequate notification that the free version of #Projectivity does not allow itself to be set as the default launcher.

Took 15 minutes for this to become obvious.

Hell I hate IT. Standardised mistreatment of users.

And a shout-out here to those folk who have their software/websites doing so much better than most. #Libation comes immediately to mind here. And webpages with accurate dates. ✅️

Much messing around, wasted time, searching for "reinstall Libation", using Timeshift etc.

Then I finally checked the error log.
Strange thing is that I could understand the problem.

One of my virtual drives was not mounted.

Testing out audiobookshelf. Uploaded my Audible audiobooks, and transferred all my podcasts from overcast with an opml file. So far so good. Currently using ShelfPlayer to access my server.

@calcifer Tall ask. As far as I know, #Audible is one of the very few places to get #audiobooks. And it’s the simplest to get books from as well.

I buy them from the #Audible website and have #Libation running on a server to auto download to home storage and strip the DRM off. For playback I use #Audiobookshelf which has both streaming and local download capabilities. The #iOS app is in TestFlight though.

Does anyone have experience using #libation on extremely large #audible libraries? I'm meaning a couple thousand items; I've had the same audible subscription for over 18 years. I'd like to manage my library myself and use the books I "own" in apps I like better, but I'd also like not to get my Amazon account banned for downloading like a tb of audible books from them all at once.

Amazon is now sending a 2FA security login code to my phone. It was only by using the Libation-facilitated option of "log in using your browser" that I learnt of this.

That was as far as I got today.

I did a thing. I saw this beer at the store and succumbed. I love pickle brine. I love beer. I don't like sour beer in general. It was telling that it was only packaged as single cans. Downsides: it's cloudy and doesn't hold the foam. Upsides: if you like drinking pickle brine (and I do), this is very much like that. My $SPOUSE, who doesn't enjoy drinking pickle brine tasted it and declared that it tastes better than pickle brine, so there's that. #libation #beer #drink #beercrime

Take Time To Liberate

We’re keeping this one easy — no coding required!

However, it might not apply to everyone, since many of you likely abandoned Amazon/Audible a long time ago for books of any kind, including audiobooks. I stopped purchasing Amazon Kindle books a long time ago; but, only recently decided to cancel Amazon Prime completely — and stop using Amazon altogether — after Amazon’s attempt at charging an “advertisement tax” for Prime Video (~$4.00 USD/month if you want pseudo-ad-free shows).

If you had or have the “Audible” habit, then today you get to break said habit by de-DRM-ing your Audible library (painlessly).

We’ve covered this topic before, but Libation is a far more polished (and, free) solution.

Libation

I won’t blather too much about Libation since there is a ton of information in the GitHub repo, including a step-by-step walkthrough.

Part of this setup is you providing your credentials to Audible, which are your credentials to Amazon. That’s a pretty scary thing. So, I isolated the install on a dedicated system on my “see if this thing is skeezy” VLAN. Then ran a live packet capture whilst doing the authentication dance, and checked it afterwards and — for at least my experience — nothing skeezy happened. No attempts to shunt your creds to some awful third party during the auth period nor for a week while I had it running. That’s no guarantee it won’t ever be skeezy, but I’m not going to be using Audible any more, so I changed my Amazon password after it finished converting all the books. I highly recommend you do the same, and also ensure you have MFA setup.

Besides removing DRM, other reasons to use Libation include the bonkers cool Lucene search capabilities (not full-text, but all other fields), auto-tagging of books, and a robust CLI.

If you have an extensive library, this process will take a while, and you may want to exclude any podcasts or Audible-only casts (like the NYT/WaPo/etc.) from the archive (unless you do want those backed up as well). I’ve also had to restart the app more than a few times (it’s a single human project with a few intermittent extra committers, so I fully expected some rough edges).

One super cool aspect of removing the DRM is that I can run all these through Whisper when the entire process is finished for use in QuickWit (a FOSS full-text search tool we’ve covered before).

Alternative Storefronts

Along with your local library, The Internet Archive, and Project Gutenberg, there are some fine alternatives to Audible.

Libro.fm (copy the URL and nuke the referral code if that bugs you) has a similar credit system as Audible, and parts of the purchase price goes to a local bookstore of your choice. It’s also DRM-free.

Chirp is a neat service with no credit system, but has discounts (provided you don’t mind being pinged regularly about said discounts).

There are others, but I’m confident y’all either already have alternatives or can inspect more comprehensive lists for ones that match your style.

Listening On The Go

Apple has made it super hard to listen to generic audiobooks on their devices in the default “Books” app, but I’ve had great success with BookPlayer. It’s also open source, but for Apple’s *OS ecosystem.

There are plenty of others, and both Libro.fm and Chirp have Apple and Android apps that work pretty well, too.

For anyone who wants to break free of the annoying shackles of the #audible app: #Libation syncs with your account and automatically strips off the DRM. In my case it saves it straight into the content folder of #audiobookshelf (running on a NAS), which serves and streams the freed audiobooks to the entire family, each with their own account and saved progress. And while you're at it, maybe quit Audible for libro.fm - takes the Amazon out of Audiobooks. Feels really good! #audiobooks #lifetips

In my case it saves it straight into the content folder of #audiobookshelf (running on a NAS), which serves and streams the freed audiobooks to the entire family, each with their own account and saved progress. And while you're at it, maybe quit Audible for libro.fm - takes the Amazon out of Audiobooks. Feels really good! #audiobooks #lifetips
