I have been playing with the idea of rewriting an old web-app I made over the past 20 years. It's right now running on #LAMP and is targeted at #mobile devices, but I'd like to modernize it to use #PostgreSQL and a web #framework that's not old enough to be well into its first divorce.
I'm used to #Java + #Angular (and derivatives like #Ionic), but I'm thinking I want something new. What are people happy with (and have used for actual development beyond a Hello World tutorial)? I can Bing, so I'm more interested in real experiences. I'm not terribly interested in React or Vue, and have already given Swift/SwiftUI for iOS a spin, so I don't want that.
Should have a mobile-first #frontend, be decently mature so I don't have to rewrite in 2 years when support stops. I need a backend and Postgres access. Would like support for #PWA.
Can be Angular-based or stand-alone, can be separate backend and frontend or mixed/tag-soup/hydration-like. #Typescript or the like are fine, but not a requirement. Fuck #Erlang / #Elexir. If you're going to suggest #Go or #Rust better have a good argument because most people suggesting those are extremely annoying people. #Flutter / #Dart = yuck.
I'm using it to track goals/habits and make #charts, #statistics, and some basic machine learning (k-means, affinity propagation, GMM, and other #clustering, that sort of thing). I can program statistics and clustering myself, but a native chart library would be nice (heatmaps, line charts, bar charts/histograms, that sort of thing) and I wouldn't mind not having to implement my own probability distributions. User authentication (persistent between application restarts) is a must (by framework or popular libraries). I can do #Bootstrap, #tailwind, and other front-end #CSS, but I'd be perfectly happy not having to as long as I can make my widgets purple. -

These columns once graced the Grosvenor Hotel in London, until it was demolished in 1988. The stone was then used as ballast, in a ship that arrived at Swanage. The local council then acquired the columns and erected them on the waterfront, as a tourist attraction.

I feel bad for the teams behind things like #Ionic and #Flutter who try to recreate the iOS style in cross-platform frameworks. I don't think the effects can be done at all via HTML/CSS and I'm sure whatever Flutter does will be nothing but jank.
Which of course means I might have to finally buckle down and learn Swift/SwiftUI...

Game changer in my #mobile #coding was, when i figured out that i don't need #androidstudio to compile and sign #apk !

Well, I'm the lucky winner of this fancy arcade cabinet. No excuses for my terrible gaming skills now. Thanks so much to #Ionic for hosting this giveaway on discord! 🥰 I'll be sure to put it to good use.
If you aren't aware, Ionic's Capacitor and Ionic Framework (https://ionic.io) powers @voyagerapp! Some seriously awesome and underrated tech. If you have any questions about #ionic or #capacitor... AMA!

It appears Android WebViews finally implement `safe-area-inset-*` environment variables properly¹²³ 🎉
---
1. Only on Android 15+ when built with an SDK version 35+
2. Because Android 15 & SDK 35 now enforce edge-to-edge display mode on everything, so have fun with the bottom navigation bar for people who don't use gesture navigation
3. `viewport-fit=cover` vs `viewport-fit=contain` makes no difference on Android

Are there any #ionic / #capacitor experts on here that can point me to a template that passes the #appflow Android CI.
I've tried 3 templates now and all fail CI, help articles haven't been super useful.
Once I've got a stable build I'll be comfortable iterating. Surprised AppFlow's own templates don't compile.

Had an interesting session with #Claude / #cursorai today. Working on an #ionic #vue web page. Nothing complicated. A text label was getting clipped behind a toolbar. A simple solution: add some vertical padding to the CSS on top and it pops right down. Easy peasy. Right?
Went to the #AI mavens, just for fun, and HOLY CRAP!They propose an entire revised view hierarchy. Utter chaos. Massive changes across multiple files. I'm staring at it, literally 😱
It's like your 'coding partner' turning into a meth-addled conspiracy theorist. I'm thinking a newbie in a similar position is going to click 'accept' and end up hating life. This is where we are.

@bart @ianthetechie @mvexel @zverik thx for the hint. I looked at #ionic and #capacitor but programming on a webview feels like an extra layer of complexity to me. At least compared to a kind of native approach that #flutter #reactnative or #jetbrainscompose have. also I have not found any hints about the usage of #maplibre with #ionic so far (except of your example)

Does anyone know if Ionic made it to the Fediverse?
-
Now I'm thinking about my silly word game that I built with #XamarinForms (https://lexitiles.moscardino.net). It's not like I update it at all, but it will only get harder as time goes on. Maybe I should port it (back) to #Ionic. It feels like it would be a good fit for React and modern CSS….

We've been given approval to open-source a few tools and components at work, so I'll probably be sharing a few links over the next week.
Starting off, we have some scripts to take SVG files and generate everything you need for mobile app icons: https://github.com/AyogoHealth/icon-tools
This is what we've used for several years for all our Cordova and Capacitor apps, and shows my willingness to replace busy work with bash scripts. 😁
