  6. Gil Kerley's shop, Quirky Books in Albuquerque, N.M., became a haven for unhoused people. His neighbors were not happy. Alexander Sammon writes for @Slate about the complicated rise and fall of the Quirky camp. "I pressed Gil one more time on what possibly could’ve motivated him to do this, to risk his store and his neighbors’ stores too for people he barely knew. 'I just believe you have to help people at the bottom,' he said. I believe he believed that," Sammon concludes.

  7. @treleanor Bill Shorten, former Labor leader, was crucified by the Murdoch media when he sought to reform negative gearing and franking credits – reforms that would have helped millions of Australians. Now, as Shorten announces his retirement from politics to take a top job at the University of Canberra, we face a nation where homelessness is rampant, and a few wealthy individuals continue to rake it in. It’s time to reflect on how media power manipulates public opinion and stifles meaningful change. #BillShorten #MurdochMedia #PoliticalManipulation #WealthInequality #HomelessnessCrisis #Auspol

    Having a depressing morning.

It's been heartbreaking to see the same unhoused folks camped out on steam vents; tethered there as the days grow colder.

I've spent the past few weeks looking into places near me that I can volunteer at like food banks / food kitchens but there isn't really anything in center city.

I looked into what services the city offers/ what orgs needs help and almost all are religious institutions or 'work programs'

I'm not here to bash others 'trying' to help but I'm at a point where we need to seriously start investing in community organizing that treats people's immediate needs on a mutual aid basis and not a coercive 'work or die' or 'you must be saved spiritually first' relationship.

If you want to help feed houseless people check out South Philly Punks With Lunch. They feed people 3 times a week and don't ask any questions.
