👟A one‑minute look at today’s Winter Walk in Boston. An amazing morning of coming together to support our unhoused neighbors and the nonprofits doing the daily work.
🙏🏽 Dr. King said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’”
Today, thousands of footsteps answered.

I'm drafting a Myths of Homelessness Part 14. It'll discuss the fact that homelessness isn't permanent. If you experienced homelessness and made it out, and would like to share your story in the post, email it to [email protected]. Share your social handles if you want to be linked back to. My story will be included as well.
Part 14 will be the finale of the series.
If you're currently experiencing homelessness and want to share your story, it will be part of the Voices From The Street series, and you can opt to be anonymous. The goal of the Myths series and Voices series is to end the stigma by showing the reality.

Did I really lose track of posting 'Myths of Homelessness'? Parts 2 through 5 posted to the site. Get caught up here:
https://putnamhomelesssolutions.wordpress.com/category/insights/myths-of-homelessness/Part 2: “They Choose to Live This Way”
Part 3: “They Don’t Contribute to the Tax Base”
Part 4: “It’s Just a Drug or Mental Health Problem”
Part 5: “Providing Services Just Enables Them”I just started working as a Peer Specialist in addition to the Coalition. I guess I've been busy and didn't realize the site doesn't auto-post here.

Less than a month to go until the YMCA Sleep Easy event, raising vital funds for YMCA Derbyshire. I'd be really grateful for your financial support for a charity carrying out vital work for some of the most vulnerable people in our society.
Here's the link for more info and how to donate so that I can hit my target! https://www.justgiving.com/page/dean-leivers?utm_medium=FR&utm_source=CL

The Gap Between Compassion and Capacity
In our last post, we discussed the Gloria Johnson Act and why punishing our neighbors for surviving in public spaces is a failing strategy. So where does that leave us? If the street isn't the answer, where is the solution? We often hear that "we have plenty of churches and charities helping." This is true. Putnam County is home to incredibly dedicated organizations. Every day, groups like Bread of Life in Palatka and Interlachen Soup Kitchen Ministries provide hot meals. Organizations like Epic-Cure, St. Monica's, and St. Vincent DePaul…...

Strategy And Sustainability: Building A Permanent Foundation
In recent weeks, the conversation surrounding the challenges facing our homeless neighbors in Putnam County has grown louder. We see the posts, we hear the frustrations, and we acknowledge the outcry. It is no secret that the current system is fragmented and, in many ways, broken.
However, at the Putnam County Homelessness Solutions Coalition, we believe that identifying a problem is only the first step. The second—and most vital—step is building a permanent foundation to fix it.

I am justifiably angry. At my struggle, yes. At the struggles of people with less ability to extricate themselves from it, more. WAY more.
And I have stable housing until Feb. 5. So I'm back for a bit at least! Now here's the result of my being back. I hope it makes you angry too. 💙
Social services are closed 128 out of 168 hours a week, making them functionally absent for 76% of the human lived experience. Catastrophes don't wait for business hours, but we’ve engineered a system that does—prioritizing bureaucratic comfort over human survival.
In my latest essay, I perform a searing audit of the "un-help" industry and why "perseverance" is often just a code word for wasting the time of the suffering to pad the egos of the privileged.
It’s time to stop telling the poor to "tighten their belts" while we fund the non-profit overhead that helps no one.

Gotta love it when your LOCAL newspaper is behind the news. 🤣 We had regional news out here frequently covering our homeless story. Formed our coalition ( https://putnamhomelesssolutions.wordpress.com ), had several meetings, appeared at several county, city, and joint commission meetings, and they're just now covering the story. Fridays coalition meeting will have Action News Jax, Palatka Daily News (the local news), and our local Congress Reps office present.
Our movement and push for a shelter and transitional programs to get these people off the streets and back on their feet is picking up momentum quickly (I just started this back in beginning of December). I was made the lead because I'm not allowing the nonprofits to pivot away from the shelter. So fine, I'm accepting my role and I'll make sure city and county are pressured until it's permitted to move forward with the shelter. We will not be silenced or ignored.

If you believe in a cause, NEVER GIVE UP! In only a month we had news media attention. Less than two months, we have local politicians standing up against the rest of them and a news reporter is interested in attending our next homeless meeting.
We're dismantling corruption, exposing the truth about homelessness and the lack of resources, building tight cooperation between nonprofits across the county, and pushing for new legislation on the state level. All this is being accomplished because we refuse to be sit down and be silenced while our neighbors go homeless across the county.
Your voice can bring change. It's a process, full of bureaucratic red tape you'll have to cut through, but you can do it.
I'm not saying we've achieved our goal in this short time but things are in motion and our voice is growing in number.
