Been a slowish week so far but today we apply for my daughters Open University 30 wk course Arts and Languages Access Module, to start in October. Then once this is completed she will start a music degree, again with the OU.
We've skipped GCSE exams which some may frown upon because 'every kid needs to do them' but that's not actually the case. There is no legal obligation for her to sit GCSE exams, and she can do them at any age in the future should she wish to.
I am confident she has a good understanding of the subjects as she did them online from home over the last 2 years however she then discovered a passion and talent for music and that's where her muse is leading her.
You cant do self led learning without supporting them to self lead their learning right 😜

Going to start posting more about our HE journey :)
My daughter is 16 in June and has been HE since she was 13 due to an unsupportive school environment where her difficult menstrual cycles and social anxiety were punished.
Today, she watched a documentary about the Outback (Surviving the Outback) and practiced some piano scales before doing some work on her Music course with #openlearn which is an amazing resource for older home edders.
This evening she will help me cook dinner, and wants to watch another doc later about #Aboriginal history/culture as the previous doc peaked her interest. Not sure which yet so open to suggestions :)

"I come to SDE partly from that perspective but even more from the perspective of evolutionary biology. I see imposed education as not only morally wrong but ineffective because it ignores and overrides children’s biologically natural ways of educating themselves and, in many, develops a distaste for learning that can interfere with a child’s natural zest for life and the learning that comes with life."

"Proponents of SDE come to it from various perspectives. Many come from a perspective focusing on democratic values. Imposed education always involves a violation of what most democratic thinkers regard as basic human rights – the rights of self-determination, free assembly and free speech, among others. If children can become well educated without coercion, then it would seem to be immoral to subject them to coercive methods."

"As more Black families opt out of public schools, they’re confronting the racist materials dominating the home education market and building alternatives."

The Gift of Literacy by Veronica Smith
Daily writing prompt Share one of the best gifts you’ve ever received. View all responsesI had learning difficulties as a child. Back in 1960s Ireland, class sizes were large. If you could not keep up with the quick-to-learn kids, then you were more or less abandoned by the teachers. Such was my case. Instead of trying to help me, the teachers labelled me as “slow” and kept me back with the younger children – which did not help my self-confidence!
Then, around the age of ten, I became seriously ill. Staying at home to recover, my parents discovered that I could barely read or write or do arithmetic. They felt horrified that the school, which had eagerly taken their money, had not bothered to teach me anything!
It was my parents and my older siblings, who gave me the priceless gift of literacy, not the educational system. They took the time to teach me, being patient with my learning difficulties and encouraging me to want to learn, without being ridiculed.
In later years, I returned to study as a mature student. I got my degree with Open University in my late forties. As you can see, I love to write and to do research.
I have several friends, who have chosen to home-educate their children, instead of sending them to conventional schools. These children – now young adults! – are the best adjusted young people I have ever met! They are smart and self-confident and prove, yet again, that it is their families who have given them the amazing gift of literacy.
Once you can read, you can teach yourself anything!

Why Samantha feels homeschooling robbed her of a 'proper education': Two former homeschoolers who say they were denied a proper education are calling for mandatory home visits. But advocates say tighter regulations aren't the answer. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-02-02/former-homeschoolers-call-for-home-visits-regulation/104674902?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=mastodon #homeeducation #homeschooling #homeschool

Anxiety is the most common reason why parents choose to take pupils out of school.

Anyone who knows me well knows that child autonomy is extremely important to me.
Stumbled across this article while enjoying my morning coffee. This book, as well as Peter Gray's "Free to Learn" were instrumental in opening my own eyes to so much.
I rarely talk about this stuff on my general socials, but I felt the need to share. I'll also link to both "How Children Learn," As well as "Free to Learn," which as I said are excellent and must-read titles for anyone who follows youth rights or believes in unschooling, or simply wishes to learn how to be a better ally to children.

Two of my children opt to do their studies in 2-3 hours of straight work, going from assignment to assignment, quiz to quiz, test to test, subject to subject.
The third gives himself regular breaks.
I have no point, just something I've noticed.

I’m feeling suddenly, oddly isolated. We live in a small Midwestern town and the only co-op here is very religious. Like you have to answer questions about what you believe in order to join. I was looking at how to go about setting up a particular lesson and was hit with “I JUST WISH I HAD SOMEBODY TO TALK TO!” So where are my cool, leftist, secular homeschoolers? #HomeSchool #HomeEducation

Did you know that birds have a unidirectional breathing flow? Because I didn't and it's super neat. They have air sacs behind and in front of their lungs (upstream and downstream, respectively). On an inhale, air is pulled from outside of the bird and into the back air sacs, and out of the lungs and into the front air sacs; on an exhale, the air goes from the back air sacs into the lungs, and out of the front air sacs to outside of the bird. So it's actually on the exhalation that air enters their lungs. This set up allows them to be more efficient at getting oxygen from the air than the mammalian system is.
