I posted this some time ago, but now that I have a few blind friends who are involved in programming, and especially the musical side of things, I figured I would try again. To summarise. I want to see if it is possible to make pre-electric recordings sound like early electric ones. So one from 1903 might sound like it came from 1930. I doubt we could go any higher than the 1940's, if that, given the constraints of acoustic recording, but it would still be a huge improvement in sound. Perhaps, with the right software, some frequences can be restored. The trouble is that there are only a few such programs and all are inaccessible with screen readers. I explain things more fully at the below link. Normally, this is a subreddit about opera recordings and singers from the 1950's and earlier, so if you have no clue about this but like opera, feel free to join us in general.

I just inherited this wonder. I have an issue, though : the weight of the head slows and stops down the disk. Does someone know how to fix this ?

The gramophone I was given. It's rusty, the soundbox is loose, the handle broken, but it still works ! and plays ok if I keep hold of the soundbox.
I think it's a 1920s/30s Columbia 109a.
I'm not sure why the inside, including the arm, horn, and case that typically is some sort of leatherette, has a thick badly applied covering of black gloss paint!
It should be worth refurbishing, although removing the paint might be a messy and long job....

A not quite local posh area house was doing a giveaway and one of my friends managed to reserve some items for me.
I now have a working wind-up gramophone with some records. It's in very poor condition, but mostly cosmetic, the soundbox needs fitting more securely but it plays !
I also have a very nice 1950's(?) cabinet with a drop down shelf, some drawers, and shelves with glass doors below.
Photos to follow!

The gramophone record has a unique charm & sound quality. The analog sound gives a warm & rich tone that’s more pleasant than digital formats. Perhaps the nostalgia contributes - to browse through the records, put on the needle & listen to the music in its entirety.
An engaging experience. -

I've finally managed to find a copy of a record I've been looking for for ages! This was my 3rd great grandfather Dafydd John's favourite song. He passed away in 1894 so wouldn't have ever heard it on a record. The choir is from the Borough Welsh Chapel in London, which is still in existence. They won the National Eisteddfod in Liverpool in 1929 with the same conductor on this record, so my guess is that it was recorded late 20s or early 30s.
Interestingly this record plays at 80rpm, and Discogs has what I assumed was a repress on a different label, but that one plays at the standard 78. (Do I now need to acquire a copy of that one for comparison?)

Hello everyone! I've been around fedi for a while on my own Mastodon server, but I've now decided to join beige.party at @jessica's recommendation - so here's my new #Introduction!
In a mid-30s cis man from Bristol, UK. I mostly toot about #genealogy, #esperanto, and #gramophone records. I also play a bunch of musical instruments and arrange classical and folk music for ukuleles and ocarinas, and occasionally play them in videos.
I've been pretty quiet on fedi for a while, but hoping to get more involved with the community again now!

New experiment: delete all of the stock apps (File manager, gallery, video player, music player, etc.) from my #Android phone (a #Realme C55) and replace them with #FOSS alternatives from #Fdroid and #IzzyOnDroid :
- File manager -> File Explorer
- Photos and video player -> #AvesLibre
- Music player -> #Gramophone
- Google Contacts -> #Fossify ContactsI've deleted #GooglePhotos too, since I'm going to use #Filen_io and #Megasync for that purpose.

Cheap but cursed circuit from 20th century era for small #gramophone / #phonograph using single pentode #valve / #tube and selenium rectifier - the whole chassis of the amplifier is connected to one side of mains - depending which way the plug is inserted, the chassis can sit at mains voltage! (and we had this in countries where the mains was 200-250V)
Equipment like this is supposed to be well insulated (including grub screws in control knobs)

We’ve collected 78’s for years, but this is something else! Just under 4 days to go, and “Midnight, The Stars And You” has hit £2000 and is still rising. If you’re curious, it’s the closing theme from “The Shining” starring Jack Nicholson. Played at the end of the film when he appears in an old B&W photo. -

An ongoing auction, and the most amazing thing I’ve seen on eBay. I put in a bid not knowing how rare this Al Bowlly record actually was. If you’re a horror movie fan, or a fan of Stephen King’s “The Shining” you may recognise it.
Check your lofts and any old boxes. You may have a fortune and not know it!

The long shot of long shots, but worth a try. I’m forever the optimist! I don’t suppose anyone’s come across an original 78rpm record sleeve from 1945 like this one have they? I’ll pay if any are still out there. As far as I know it’s American, as the British versions had completely different sleeves.
Thank you, and I’m crossing my fingers! -
