  1. Interessante Entdeckung im #XMLPrague-Stream: Thorium Reader für E-Books. Endlich mal ein Ersatz für ADE und Bluefire Reader. #epub #eprdctn

  2. Wie lesen Screenreader E-Books vor, welche a11y-Features verbessern wirklich die Barrierefreiheit und welche sind nur für die Galerie? Darüber habe ich mal einen kleinen Artikel geschrieben. #eprdctn #a11y

  3. OPF guide has been deprecated since EPUB 3.0 and removed from the standard since 3.1, but today we received an error message from a German publisher that the EPUBs we produced no longer work on Kindles from 2007. I don't think even Amazon supports these devices anymore. #eprdctn

  4. A question for other #eprdctn professionals working with #ebooks / #epub and #accessibility :
Which ARIA role do you assign to a page like "Other works by this author"?

I use doc-bibliography (because it IS a bibliography of sorts) but I have a feeling that this is not the intended use for this role, seeing that the specs say "A list of external references cited in the work". What do you use for this scenario?

  5. Two notes on what we've been working on recently.

    1) We maintain Project Gutenberg's Ebookmaker software. Version 0.12 has matured over the past year, and we recently pushed out a 0.12.29 release. It's a complicated codebase that's over 10 years old, and it has to be compatible with 70,000 works in the backfile - HTML5 and EPUB3 files for every book are regenerated every month! github.com/gutenbergtools/eboo #ebooks #publicdomain #eprdctn

  6. Ended up using the free Moon+ Reader app for Android on my ageing tablet. Took multiple annoying steps to get the books loaded, but once they're there it's a nice reading experience with a lot of options to tweak. Will probably get the paid version after finishing the first book.

You have to REALLY want to avoid Amazon and other walled gardens to put up with it, though. 😬

  7. Trying out Moon+ Reader on Android and while the reading experience seems solid for regular ebooks, getting those books to the right place so you can read them is really annoying. I can totally understand anyone who sticks with their Kindle and whatever they can read via Amazon. 😞

Moon+ also supports comics formats, which is a nice bonus, but I've purposefully avoided reading comics digitally over the years, so I don't have anything to test it with.

    The future sucks.

  8. Any #eprdctn people on here?

I'm ready to go all in on #Shadowrun and don't want to deal with Amazon or B&N for ebooks. What's your favorite #epub #ebook reader for Android?

NOTE: This is specifically for reading the novels, not the game itself.

  9. @baldur uhhhhh, this has some very intriguing implications for publishers who are using a variety of Adobe products...and contractors, freelancers, and more. #eprdctn

  10. New instance, new #introduction. I am just an ordinary GenXer trying to live #carless in #YYC. I am learning French and Dutch in case I can make an escape. I don’t post much, more a listener than a talker, more booster than tooter. I am interested in #climate #cities #urbanism #cycling #transit #basicincome #craftbeer #coys #history #science #statistics #books #writing #publishing #eprdctn #a11y #knitting and of course #cats.

  11. I’m India (she/her), and I’ve been rather online for a rather long time.

When at leisure, I’m usually reading (lately it’s 99% shōjo manga); #baking; or tending my #cats, Ampersand and Interrobang.

Workwise, I've been involved in nonprofit administration, book production, typesetting, design, art direction, #eprdctn (e-books), and miscellaneous art-adjacent stuff. Now I build software (mostly web apps), which I try to make accessible.

  12. Making an #epub for a friend. Working from an #Indesign document, I begin to question my sanity and the meaning of life.

BUT! I think I've beaten the confounded document into submission, as it now exports a relatively standards-compliant epub3 that I only need to make a few changes to in order to maintain my professional pride.

(yes, I work in #eprdctn and it's not my first rodeo with Indesign and it's "I know better than you"-exporting. Still frustrating as hell)
