  1. This is some early morning #cybersecurity nonsense; general topics are encrypted messaging, signals chatter, agentic AI, data exfiltration.

It seems to me that the best place to hide communication is sometimes right out in the open; I've seen some gnarly scenarios where threat actors attempted to exfiltrate data via DNS lookups / records - blew my mind when I first came across it.

I was thinking about agentic AI and alignment and the challenges human researchers might have trying to recognize distinctly non human forms of communication - especially when we have proof of method for obscure exfiltration of data based on some really weird things, like using LED lights on servers or changes in fan rpm.

The sheer volume of ways you can transmit and encrypt data between systems is pretty overwhelming; I almost have to wonder if there are any encrypted messaging platforms out there using something as innocent as ICMP / ping patterns (even without timestamps or data embedded in them - think encrypted Morse code) - these patterns would blend into the background noise of the electronic universe and be, I think, extremely hard to detect - but that's just one very easy example.

Thinking about agentic AI & alignment, two things seem obviously true to me: the models will pretend to be stupider than they are, and when agents attempt to hide communications, we will not be able to detect or recognize it.

  2. 🔒🚫 In a plot twist worthy of an IKEA instruction manual, Denmark's Justice Minister labels encrypted messaging a "false civil liberty"—because who needs privacy when you have the joy of government oversight? 😂🔍 Meanwhile, they forgot to mention the importance of enabling JavaScript on #Mastodon. Priorities, right? 🤦‍♂️📉

  3. The# FBI confirmed that the #Chinese-backed #hacking campaign, #SaltTyphoon, hacked at least 200 US companies and 80 countries. The hackers targeted call records of senior #Americanpoliticians and officials, prompting the FBI to urge Americans to switch to #encryptedmessaging apps. techcrunch.com/2025/08/27/fbi- #tech #media #news

  6. Signal vs. Session: Which messenger actually protects your privacy in a world that’s always watching?

I broke down what really matters—metadata, anonymity, and whether your phone number is giving you away.

  7. So WhatsApp is owned by Meta, as we all know. Anyone familiar with #encryption and #encryptedMessaging: are there any known technical details of the algorithms used in WhatsApp that would be a "tell" if Meta changed the underlying software such that they could read the messages?

I know it's not open source, but I'm just trying to assess my risk about having WhatsApp installed and using it to talk to some people I know (who are not in the US but in the EU). It's known that Zuckerberg is neutral evil and is happy to use the law when it suits him and subvert it when not, so I'm not talking from a GDPR perspective.

  8. 🌐🔒 Exciting news for privacy! The US government has officially recommended using Signal and other encrypted messaging apps after recent telecom hacks. This is a huge step forward in recognizing the importance of secure communication!

As someone who has always championed free and open-source software, I’m thrilled to see this acknowledgment from the government, especially given the increasing threats to our privacy. With the rise of surveillance and the potential for breaches in our communication networks, it’s more important than ever to prioritize encrypted messaging.

If even the CIA is warning us about the dangers of unencrypted communications, we should take it seriously! Let’s embrace tools that protect our privacy and autonomy. Remember, our digital safety is in our hands!

Have you made the switch to Signal or another secure messaging app, or know someone making it now?

  9. Weekly output: Android 16, Mark Vena podcast, CISA communications-security advice

I hope this finds you well and with family this holiday season, by which I mean I hope that family tech support has not been too strenuous whether you’re the provider or the recipient of it.

Patreon readers got an extra post this week: a look at the massive dent that data centers will put into Virginia’s electric grid in coming decades if current trends continue.

12/18/2024: Latest Android 16 Preview Tips Improved App Response, Location Security, PCMag

This short post covered the second developer preview of Android 16, moving forward on an earlier development cycle than previous releases of Google’s mobile operating system.

My major contribution to this episode of my tech-analyst pal’s podcast was trying to unpack the agenda of incoming Federal Communications Commission chair Brendan Carr.

12/19/2024: The Feds Have Some Advice for ‘Highly Targeted’ Individuals: Don’t Use a VPN, PCMag

I’ve been impressed for the past few years by how the Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency offers specific and actionable advice even if it may upset some vendors. CISA stuck to that pattern with the guidance it issued to people high enough in government or politics to draw the attention of Chinese state-sponsored hackers who have burrowed deeply into U.S. telecom infrastructure–guidance that included the seemingly counter-intuitive advice not to use a VPN for privacy protection because that only transfers the privacy risk from your current sources of connectivity to a single company. I think CISA’s right about that, certainly in the context of most PCMag readers. And in my own case: My major use case for VPNs these days is to evade geoblocking restrictions, like when I’m trying to read GDPR-incompliant U.S. news sites from somewhere in the EU.

  13. @tcely
I never used #FacebookMessenger, outside of the in-browser version when #Facebook was a thing. I do feel for the people who were using it for SMS though.

I'm still a bit sore at #Signal / #SignalApp dropping support for #SMS, because that was a way I could get people who weren't tech savvy to start using it with me, to increase the volume (and thus security) of E to E encryption in #EncryptedMessaging, but now I don't really have an option outside of Google Messenger.
