  10. So as someone who used em dashes before AI – how do we take them back?

  11. TechCrunch: OpenAI says it’s fixed ChatGPT’s em dash problem. β€œOpenAI says ChatGPT will now ditch the em dashes if you tell it to. The telltale sign that supposedly signals text written by AI has popped up everywhere in recent months, including in school papers, emails, comments, customer service chats, LinkedIn posts, online forums, ad copy, and more.”

  12. I was amused and a tad peeved when it was revealed the ChatGPT was being caught out by its excessive use of #emDashesβ€”I like using them, myselfβ€”but now apparently OpenAI says users can tell the app not to use them. OpenAI still doesn’t know why it overuses them though. They’re still looking into that.

  13. #OpenAI has addressed the issue of #ChatGPT’s excessive use of #emdashes. Users can now instruct the chatbot to avoid using em dashes in their custom instructions, providing more control over the punctuation’s frequency. techcrunch.com/2025/11/14/open #tech #media #news

  14. I'm seeing lots of writers confirming they use em dashes for today's #WritersCoffeeClub
First - YAY! Fellow em dash lovers!
Second - People really need to diversify their reading if so many of us confirm that we use them, only for people to use em dashes as a sign it was written with AI.

Also, are people forgetting that AI is trained on real people's writingβ€”if AI uses em dashes, it's because real writers use them, not the other way round.

  15. @immarisabel As a fellow em-dasherβ€”you betcha I emβ€”seeing your blog delighted me, having been told mere weeks ago by a fellow author that it was a hallmark of AI writing and it is being used less, which left me sad. I use it extensively in my fiction as I never shy away from a long continuing thought sentence when it's the write way to say what I mean. The author said they were soldiering on, and well they should; so should we. Good writingβ€”even with em-dashesβ€”differentiates itself from mediocre averaging-the-mean AI drivel. The thing about AI is that it pattern matchesβ€”it discovers trends because it is incapable of reasoning, meaning its use of the em is because people commonly write using it! Maybe what's popular are em parentheticals, or the em abrupt endβ€”? Of course AI uses the word Is a lot. Maybe we should stop using that?

I even use the em-dash for signature lines.

    β€”R.S.

  17. #Insomnia gives you the opportunity to some incredibly crazy things sometimes.

For example, over the past several days I have been experimenting with
#ChatGPT. More because I was bored nothing more. And I wanted to see how good some of these newer models were with #writing. #Fiction.

    Now, I
#write. Fiction. #ScienceFiction mainly. Although I've dabbled into other more mainstream fiction #genres too except fantasy & horror. Other than #Grammarly and #ProWritingAid I've never really used #AI for anything other than to help me sound less snarky when replying to Reddit comments. A look through my history here and you can see just how unfiltered I am about topics I care passionately and deeply about.

But I've never used AI to actually *
#write* a #story, from start to finish. At least not until now.

    And since I'm usually a *
    #pantser* when I write, I just started with a simple #prompt and a simple #premise.

    And holy fuck. Holy-holy fuck.

I mean, the AI didn't write it all by itself. I had to
prompt it, guide it. Even fix some glaring and stupid mistakes (AI really has no cognitive understanding of the real world right now.)

And of the 40,000+ words it's written just about every single paragraph needs to be
#edited. Heavily in places too. The overuse of #em-dashes is real y'all. I use em-dashes, but I don't use them in every fucking paragraph!

    But the foundation is there.

The premise is unique. The story is unique. The characters are unique. And they have a depth to them that frankly has blown my mind.

I am both incredibly excited and very scared for what comes next but only a fool would take something AI has created and
#publish it without #editing whether it's a Reddit comment, an Email, a social network post, or a tome.

  26. This piece makes the good point that "suspicion of the em dash also speaks to our mounting paranoia over automated communication" β€” we know there are people passing off AI crap as their own writing, and we want to be able to spot it. But the em dash "cannot be a reliable metric of AI reliance for the simple reason that it is a case of the software mimicking *human* writing patterns."
