Eddington ist eine Kleinstadt in New Mexico. Mitten in der COVID-Pandemie im Jahr 2020 geraten Sheriff Joe und Bürgermeister Ted aneinander. Es entsteht eine Eskalationsspirale, die nicht mehr aufzuhalten ist. Ari Aster hat wiederum gezaubert, ist aber nicht sein bester Film. Trotz seiner 145 Minuten ist er spannend, mit guter Sozialkritik und voller schwarzem Humor. Lohnt sich.

Disappointed in the Oscar nominations this morning. I think Sinners deserved all of its categories except for screenplay, but Eddington deserved, at the very minimum, Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Screenplay & Best Editing. To see F1 get Best Picture over it was a little aggravating.
I also think Leo should not have gotten the nomination.

"Eddington" (2025) is a story of a small-town sheriff who, in the midst of COVID-19 pandemics, decides to run for the mayor. At first, it seemed that was going to be the plot, but as the movie progressed, the plot was expanding its scope, mixing a lot of stuff in (like conspiracy theories and Antifa, albeit with artistic licence). Overall, it was interesting because it was not possible to predict what will happen next.

My Viewing and Reading Picks for 2025
Another year comes to an end. A new one gets ready to begin. 2025 felt less complex than 2024. Lines weren’t as blurry with one exception that I’ll get to later. In a year when the rush to redefine and compete for the lowest common denominator felt like a three-legged sack race over broken glass complexity again drew my attention and stuck with me. There’s a great leveling happening, whether intentional or not. But as long as we can advertise against whatever the content is, it seems to matter less and less what the content is or how it’s made.
When it comes to viewing entertainment it was a year when the quality line between movies and streaming TV blurred even more as excellent series work competing with the big screen for some of my favorite viewing. The Pitt and Adolescence were two of the finest things I watched this year.
There are a number of titles in these lists that would qualify for what is being called Resistance Cinema. Each one is deserving of inclusion in that list for immediacy. Any lasting impact will only be determined with the passage of time and all of what we’re currently resisting either cements or cracks.
I don’t believe in “best of” lists. There’s good stuff being created amidst all of the mediocrity and my judgement on what’s good is probably not yours. I pick what attracts and holds my attention. I also don’t see or read everything and the holiday release schedule geared to coming in under the wire for awards recognition is a silly game for insiders and not for me. There also may be a title or two that I didn’t catch until 2025 even though it was released in previous years. Goodness knows there are books waiting to be read.
If there’s a link with a title, I took the time to write about it. I should have done that more. So here’s a list in no particular ranking order of what I found most intriguing throughout the year.

Festa del Cinema 2025: Here We Go!
Cronache dall’Auditorium (Mercoledì 15 Ottobre)
La sentite anche voi quest’aria strana? C’è qualcosa intorno a noi, un po’ come nel sottosopra di Stranger Things. Ma dove siamo finiti? Temo di conoscere la risposta: dev’essere di nuovo quel periodo dell’anno. Deve essere tornata la Festa del Cinema di Roma. E queste devono essere di nuovo le mie Cronache dall’Auditorium, quel diario di bordo, quel taccuino di viaggio che condivido con voi, amici cinefili e amiche cinefile, lungo tutta la Festa del Cinema di Roma. Diamoci dentro, allora. Come direbbe Fabrizio Romano: HERE WE GO!Non comincerò come sempre dicendovi che la prima volta che ho messo piede alla Festa del Cinema ero uno studentello di 25 anni, con uno zaino pieno di sogni e di belle speranze. Avevo detto che non lo avrei detto, ma mentivo: siamo all’edizione numero 20 e io c’ero, Gandalf, quando nel 2006 Nicole Kidman, Martin Scorsese e Leo DiCaprio aprivano le danze alla prima edizione, ero lì il giorno in cui la forza degli uomini venne meno (soprattutto vedendo Monica Bellucci nel suo prime passeggiare sul tappeto rosso), ero lì quando Viggo Mortensen si fermava davanti alla mia videocamera per farsi intervistare. Quando pensavo che per quell’intervista avrei vinto il Pulitzer. Ero pieno di sogni, ve l’avevo detto. Detto ciò, diciannove anni dopo, rieccoci sempre qui, con molti meno sogni e speranze decisamente imbruttite, ma con quella cosa che mi butta giù dal letto dopo cinque o sei ore di sonno per andarmi a vedere un gruppo di persone che si muovono e parlano dentro uno schermo. La chiamano passione, dicono.
Le cose della vita mi hanno riportato, temporaneamente, nella poco ridente Monte Mario, quartiere più alto di Roma ma decisamente più vicino alla Festa del Cinema rispetto al gioiello di Roma Sud, la Garbatella, che mi ha visto risiedere felicemente per ben dodici anni (seppur costringendomi ad attraversare Roma alle 8 del mattina in auto o in bici per raggiungere l’Auditorium). Essendo a dieci minuti d’auto dalla Festa, ho il tempo di fare colazione con comodo, una doccia che avrebbe dovuto cacciare il bisogno di dormire ancora e sedermi al pc per prenotare le proiezioni di dopodomani (se avete seguito il diario degli anni scorsi, saprete che c’è una cosa diabolica chiamata Boxol, un sito sopra il quale ogni mattina alle 8 è possibile prenotare un posto per gli eventi del dopodomani). Per essere sicuro di fare refresh nel momento esatto in cui escono i posti, quest’anno mi sono attrezzato con un orologio atomico che mi permetterà di essere uno dei primi ad entrare sulla piattaforma, per evitare la coda e soprattutto non perdermi l’evento per il quale spero di aprire gli occhi ogni mattina: l’incontro con Richard Linklater di lunedì prossimo (lo potrò prenotare sabato mattina, se ci riesco).
Dopo aver agevolmente prenotato le tre proiezioni che intendo seguire venerdì prossimo, mi metto in macchina e, insieme alla mia fidata Bobby Jean (la mia Panda rossa), sfreccio in discesa verso il quartiere Flaminio. Stamattina la Festa apre alle 8.30, visto che Eddington, il film di Ari Aster con Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal ed Emma Stone, dura 2 ore e mezza (e le proiezioni successive cominciano alle 11, per chi ci dovrà o vorrà andare). Quando arrivo sembra tutto uguale: certo, è cambiato il manifesto e di conseguenza ci sono pannelli differenti affissi alle pareti e sugli stand, ma a parte questo mi sento già risucchiato nel sottosopra della Festa del Cinema. Non ho il tempo di soffermarmi troppo sui dettagli perché sono quasi le 8.30 e il film sta per cominciare. Mi dirigo verso il Teatro Studio e, davanti alle porte della sala, salgo i gradini che mi porteranno alla poltroncina che avevo prenotato due giorni fa. Arrivato all’ultimo scalino mi trovo davanti la folla di giornalisti, conoscenti, amici, che ogni anno popola la rassegna romana: la sensazione mi ricorda quella di quando sali gli scalini dello Stadio Olimpico e, improvvisamente, la scena si apre sulle tribune e sulle curve, gremite, vive, rumorose. Insomma, mi sono sentito a casa.
Parlavamo di Eddington, dunque. Siamo in un piccolo villaggio del New Mexico, dove Joaquin Phoenix è sceriffo di una centrale di polizia composta solo da lui e da altri due elementi, Pedro Pascal è il sindaco che vuole appoggiare la costruzione di un enorme data center sul terreno comunale, Emma Stone è la moglie dello sceriffo, depressa, apatica, vagamente interessata a strampalate teorie del complotto. In tutto questo siamo in piena pandemia Covid, con le sue paure e qualche episodio di isteria collettiva. A sconquassare la quotidianità della cittadina c’è anche il caso dell’assassinio d George Floyd, che scatena focolai di protesta tra gli attivisti più giovani. In questa enorme quantità di carne sul fuoco, si dipana la vera storyline del film: Joaquin Phoenix, stufo di ciò che vede, decide di candidarsi come nuovo sindaco della città. Come spesso capita nei film di Ari Aster (vedi Midsommar), il tema (anzi, i temi) del film e ciò che si vuole raccontare è molto più interessante rispetto alla storia che viene mostrata. Detto ciò, il film funziona bene, ha anche due o tre momenti piuttosto spassosi, ma si regge interamente sulle possenti spalle di Joaquin Phoenix, che fa davvero il bello e il cattivo tempo, facendosi amare, poi odiare, poi compatire e via dicendo. Dai, è un buon inizio per la Festa del Cinema.
Oggi è andata così, non ho visto altro, ma da che mondo è mondo il primo giorno si guarda sempre e solo un film, un po’ per riabituarsi a certi ritmi, per riprendere confidenza con le scomodissime poltroncine dell’Auditorium, per ritrovare un po’ di quell’aria di cui vi parlavo in apertura. Il programma di domani prevede tre film, il mio quarantaquattresimo compleanno (spero di trovare il tempo per un brindisi!) e la presenza di Ari Aster sul tappeto rosso. Restate nei dintorni, perché ne vedrete delle belle.
