🧵 2/3
Two lapses in "The Brutalist" caught my attention.
The African American character Gordon, played by Isaach De Bankolé, seems to have been shoehorned in for reasons of duty rather than drama. His relationship with the protagonist is not explored in much depth, nor is the larger theme of the bonds and tensions between Jewish immigrants and Black Americans. Gordon belongs less to the gritty Pennsylvania of the fifties than to a Stanley Kramer style Hollywood "message" film of the same era.
Although the film did not drag for me, the second part lost its way dramatically, with an absurdly meodramatic "reveal" and a clumsily attached epilogue.
