This kind of political history is so essential to understanding the crises liberal democracies find themselves in. But few people under 50 have any memory of a time when democratic institutions weren't sidelined in favour of corporations.

The bad guys are winning. Despite a dire first quarter on Wall Street, the worst guys you know are doing just fine. That includes defense technology company Palantir (founder: megadonor Peter Thiel and leading the charge on AI warfare), infamous tobacco firm Philip Morris (which has long lobbied to keep Americans addicted to cigarettes), and the ubiquitous discount chain store Dollar General (yuk).
