The US Federal Trade Commission launched an “Inquiry on Tech Censorship” to “better understand how technology platforms deny or degrade users’ access to services based on the content of their speech or affiliations.” They are asking people who have been “banned, shadow banned, demonetized, or otherwise censored” to share their comments as part of a request for information until May 21.

  7. Don't Delete Art - a manifesto -

Social media is a critical avenue for artistic exposure and expression; in 2020, it replaced art fairs as the third most successful way for galleries to sell art. As a result, social media corporations have become cultural gatekeepers with unprecedented power to determine which art works can freely circulate and which ones are banned or pushed into the digital margins.

Overly restrictive and unclear community guidelines, along with vague definitions as to what counts as “objectionable” material, routinely erase art from search functions, explore functions, and hashtags. Algorithmic errors result in the removal of work, in account deletion, suppression of reach, and in loss of followers. Appeals processes are difficult, protracted, and often ineffective.

As cultural workers and institutions we are deeply concerned about this arbitrary and needlessly aggressive gatekeeping. It negatively impacts artists—who feel fearful and powerless, and often opt to censor themselves—and considerably restricts public access to visual art. Furthermore, as social media companies are held to different and changing regulatory standards in the US, Europe, and the UK, it will be critical for at-risk artists to be considered and valued as companies adapt. The artists and audiences that are likely to be most severely affected are those living in oppressive regimes, those coming from marginal groups, and those who lack museum or gallery representation.

For social media to be a place where the arts and artists can thrive, we call for the reconsideration of existing restrictions on artistic content; for review of alleged violations; and for a better appeals and notifications process as specified by the Don’t Delete Art Campaign and the Santa Clara Principles. Every platform should have established methods for incorporating artist perspectives into its content moderation policies, as well as special procedures for the review and appeal of art-related posts.

Join us in telling social media companies that there must be greater support of artistic expression on social media.

  15. How to find me on Facebook (sorry, I only accept personal friends) this is now my profile photo .. I think people who mainly focus on how shit twatter is may fail to fully appreciate how shit #Meta is. And, altogether, how limiting most social media is becoming.

It's common to be banned for pretty much nothing and once it's happened a few times, to get more vague and weird punishments for doing nothing at all.

Last week I was given a '2' day ban that lasted 4 days, for posting an image that was non-sexual and was well censored. Like many people, I suspect that my appeal was denied because the people in the image were not typically beautiful.

Yesterday, seeming for no reason, there's a warning on my account that my posts will now appear down the list in my friend's feeds (these are my actual friends) not getting to see my posts which are nearly all set as not public.

On Instagram, so many artists and poets are finding their images and words blocked. There's also thousands of blocked tags.

Please let's not fuck up Mastodon with hate speech, right-wing nastiness, conspiracy rubbish, or endless stolen, uncredited, shit porn.

  19. I'm bored of Meta banning my non-sexual artwork. Instagram has a strangle hold on the visual arts, I'd like to stop using it but it has .. a strangle hold.

Fellow artists, or anyone, please help each other and post links on your web or blog pages to other artists that you like.

If you'd like me to share links your work, please reply - I'm not going to share everything as lists curated by our own tastes will be better, in my opinion, than just having long lists.

  23. @ellasoul I'd really like Mastodon to be different in lots of ways to Twitter and to Instagram. Instagram has such a dominant role in the promotion of image based content now. But like everything #FuckZuck it's stuck in a stupid, sexist, patriarchal view of the world typified by its absurd bans of women's nipples and other body types it doesn't like.

Twitter allows nudity but an awful lot of it is just people reposting other people's images without permission or credit, or without the permission or knowledge of the subject.

Instagram constantly bans art/photos that include non-sexual nudity and imposes it's rules in more and more absurd ways making users self-censor until their work is 'nice' and 'bland' and inoffensive to it's advertisers.

But still, I get far more traffic to my website starshumansnests.com/ when I signpost to it from Instagram. But I mostly have to ruin my images with stupid censorship to avoid a ban.

Even so, I've posted, censored, non-sexual images of disabled subjects and has bans when similar images of non-disabled people have been allowed.

So, unless Mastodon picks up, I need to keep posting images in Instagram 😐
