I thought #KOSA was dead. Guess it was merely... resting there for a while. Those kinds of bills, like #FOSTA and #SESTA, are a problem and I hate that they pretend that it's about protecting kids online when it's not, it's about control and #censorship, particularly of info kids (or anyone else) may need.

But of course, this butts up against one of the Fediverse's shortcomings: it isn't particularly useful for promoting illegal speech that *should* be lega, like the communications of #SexWorkers who were purged from the internet en masse following the passage of #SESTA/#FOSTA. When sex workers tried to establish a new home in the fediverse on a server called #Switter, it was effectively crushed.

NEW: I wrote for #Vice about the terribly misguided "Kids Online Safety Act," or #KOSA, which top Democrats are trying to include in a must-pass spending package.
This bill has a lot of the same problems as bills like #SESTA /
#FOSTA and the #EarnItAct.It would make kids less safe, and would be weaponized to target resources for #LGBTQ youth and censor online access to abortion information.
Congress should pass real legislation like #AICOA and #OAMA instead.

#KOSA has a lot of the same problems as #SESTA / #FOSTA and the #EARNitAct. It creates broad, poorly defined legal requirements that involve the government in dictating content moderation and content recommendation practices, and then leaves it up to state AGs to enforce.

@ablackcatstail Actually, I originally had an Masto account with the Switter instance that got run due to all the mess with #SESTA/#FOSTA; and this instance was originally founded with the intention of being a space for progressive sex workers and porn performers to defend their rights, and their legitimate space on the Left.
Obviously, I may have to build a new one for that purpose.

Hi everybody. This is my first text post on Mastadon. I’m relieved to be out of the #twitter & #facebook & #tumblr dumpster fires. Left FB several years back when it became too toxic, tumblr when they used the #SESTA/FOSTA law to rationalize targeting consenting adults & sex workers for absurd censorship, and I’m part of the #twitterexodus now. When I was at #ucsc in the ‘80s, there was visionary hope for a diverse, inclusive, connecting web communication experience. I hope we can make it so.
