  1. The Silence That Meets the Rape of #Palestinians

Male and female Palestinians describe brutal sexual abuse at the hands of #Israel’s prison guards, soldiers, settlers and interrogators.

"There is no evidence that Israeli leaders order rapes. But in recent years they have built a security apparatus where sexual violence has become, as a United Nations report put it last year, one of Israel’s 'standard operating procedures' and 'a major element in the ill treatment of Palestinians.' A report out last month, from the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, a Geneva-based advocacy group often critical of Israel, concludes that Israel employs 'systematic sexual violence' that is 'widely practiced as part of an organized state policy.' 6. Over 40 women testified that this neurologist sexually assaulted them

He performed unnecessary pelvic and breast exams

A top neurologist testified it was not medically indicated

    He lost his medical license.

The judge let him off. Ignored every single victim. Ignored the female expert doctor. Ignored the medical board and common sense.

    Burn it down.

  8. CW: Rape, abuse, Gisele Pelicot

The verdicts are expected tomorrow in the Gisele Pelicot trial - a horrific case which has shaken most of us to our core.

Its served as a painful reminder of how much damage misogyny, patriarchy and rape culture can do.

The case is a stunning example of why “not all men” rings hollow and why women are angry, fed up and scared.

Gisele was betrayed by those she trusted the most. Her husband of fifty years spent a decade drugging her and inviting men to their home to rape her while she was unconscious.

There's certainly no lack of villains in this story. From the 80+ men who assaulted her, to the husband and his disgusting betrayal, to the unknown number of men who declined to assault her but also neglected to get her help.

My article focuses on a piece of the story that hasn't received as much attention as I feel it deserves - the role her medical team played in what happened to her.

The way in which medical misogyny can and does harm us and the various ways in which disabled individuals are at increased risk.

We should all be outraged at what happened to Gisele - and what happens to many women every single day. Shame must change sides.

I hope tomorrow's verdict sees justice done - but if it doesn't - I ask everyone to raise their voice in opposition and ensure that the world knows we will not be silent any longer.

Abuse thrives in the dark... let's be committed to bringing it into the light and forcing those who harm others to take responsibility for their actions once and for all.

  9. CW: Rape, Gisele Pelicot, US election

Between what’s happening in America and the Gisele Pelicot trial - my heart is breaking for women all over the world. It feels like we’re rolling back decades of hard won gains.

The Pelicot trial in particular seems to be getting little attention in the U.S…. And I often wonder why that is. It’s a landmark case that warrants more media exposure. Are they at the point where they don’t want to see a strong fierce woman fighting back?

Whenever I hear another detail from the trial - I feel sick. It just keeps getting worse.

Imagine thinking you’re in a loving marriage - and suddenly finding out your husband has been inviting men to assault you while you’re unconscious?

Not only was her husband drugging her and soliciting men to assault her - he was downplaying her concerns about her memory loss and convinced her she was experiencing early onset Alzheimer’s or Dementia.

He would accompany her to doctors appointments - where she was desperately trying to get answers and help - and tell the doctors that she was “forgetful.”

I read one statement that said she asked him if he was drugging her once…

And he cried and gaslit her by saying “how could you think I could ever do that?”

What else was she supposed to think. She had unexplained vaginal bruising, blackouts, memory loss … it was more than a fair question.

This went on for ten years. Over 80 men raped her - some multiple times. Men of all ages and professional backgrounds. Married men. Men with children. She was harmed over and over again and no one did a thing to stop it.

Even the men who declined the husband’s invitation didn’t go to the police. They didn’t go to her. They did nothing.

Now these men are on trial - and many are trying to say she was a co-conspirator. That she “wanted” them to assault her.

This is where rape culture, misogyny and patriarchy lead.

To a place where men blame the victim even when the victim was chemically sedated by her husband

It’s not “our body your choice”. It’s MY body MY choice. That means you aren’t entitled to my body, my affection or my attention. That means a spouse can not make decisions on my behalf.

I decide what happens to my own body.

If you take that choice away from us - if you force yourself on someone - that’s the definition of assault. A husband can not consent for his wife. It doesn’t work that way and I don’t believe for a second these men thought it did. They knew what they were doing - and they did it anyways.

If you’re not following the Pelicot trial - I recommend checking it out. It’s a stunning example of why the “not all men” argument rings hollow in our ears.

Why we’re angry & fighting back. Why we must keep fighting in the face of increasing threats to our safety & autonomy.

  10. Today is a dark day for just about anyone who doesn’t look like Trump. Anyone who’s marginalized, a person of colour, an immigrant, LGBTQ+, disabled or female.

I can speak most about ableism and misogyny - especially reproductive health. So that’s what I’m going to do:

I no longer have my uterus - but I have nieces and friends with children and I fear for them. I fear for all uterus owners of reproductive age.

I know firsthand the misogyny, patriarchy and life threatening hoops I was made to jump through when I needed my uterus removed. I know just how many people see us as “incubators”.

I also know how many men view “barren” women as less than. It’s not just JD Vance and the childless cat lady comments.

I lost my uterus at 24. My long term relationship ended shortly thereafter. I dated for a decade as a “barren” young woman. Let me tell you - there were VERY few men who took the news well. Or even kindly. Or who offered any support for ME.

It went one of two ways:

    1) they were angry with me for not telling them sooner (folks a hysterectomy is not a first date conversation) and stormed off

    2) they did a hard and obvious pivot into glee because they saw an opportunity for sex without protection or consequences. I was no longer wife or girlfriend material but the “good time girl” and they didn’t hide it.

Needless to say it was one hell of a wake up call for a girl who was still fairly naive and thought she was going to find Prince Charming.

Thats why JD Vance’s comments have never surprised me. It’s why I worry about a national ban on abortion, birth control restrictions and period tracking. It’s why I worry about women of childbearing age AND women like me who still ARE of childbearing age but unable to bear children.

What will happen to people like us in this version of America? I don’t know - but the writing on the wall isn’t good.

Now is the time to unite, organize and fight back. Get loud, protect uterus owners in your life. Protect our trans friends. Marginalized people. Disabled people. Anyone who these people will “other” is someone who needs our love and support right now.

And maybe stop using period tracker apps. Just to be safe. Pen and paper it is!

  11. Misogyny in medicine is focusing more on what a man might WANT than what a woman NEEDS.

I NEEDED a hysterectomy and was told I wouldn’t survive pregnancy.

“Informed consent” for surgery looked like this:

“Don’t you want to be a Mom?”
    “You may want BIOLOGICAL children”

“What if you meet a man who wants babies?”

“What if he leaves you because you can’t bear his children?”

“Men went their OWN babies - what if you can’t do that?”

“You will feel like less of a woman.”

Brought boyfriend in to try and change their minds. Them to him:

“Will you still love her if she’s BARREN?”

    “Do you want kids?”

“What if you change your mind & want kids - will you LEAVE her?”

Him: “Save her life what I want doesn’t matter” (he understood the assignment)

The assumption through the entire process - as I got sicker and sicker - was that I should WANT to risk my life for the CHANCE to bear a child.

That if I didn’t WANT that - I would change my mind when I met the “right man”

Apparently the “man of my dreams” will be so spectacular and the love so all consuming that I will be all too happy to put my life on the line to give HIM babies.

Needless to say I found that incredibly offensive. I was dying. I was incredibly sick. I needed surgery.

This is NOT “informed consent”. This is misogynistic and patriarchal bullying.

Informed consent would have been ensuring I knew it wasn’t reversible and would mean I could never have children. Letting me know risks of complications. Risk of prolapse. Risk of early menopause

None of that was covered. It was ALL about men and babies.

I actually did have a severe post operative complication that I was woefully unprepared for because “informed consent” failed me.

We must do better. Women need autonomy over their body. Inform us. Work with us.

Don’t put the needs of a man before of our own. Don’t treat us like incubators.

We are MORE than our ability to bear children. I lost my womb at 24 and I’ve never felt like less of a woman, less of a person. I’ve never regretted it.

    Medicine needs to do better

One of the worst parts was that when I ended up having a complication - I was gaslit & ignored again. Told I didn’t know my body AGAIN. I needed my boyfriend to get them to even run tests.

Now - decades later - I’m still dealing with issues from the surgery and complication.
I can never know how different things might have been had they acted faster - but I DO know I was never able to fully trust the medical profession again.

My article on this is below - and I’m working on a future one about informed consent (or lack thereof)

  12. CW: Rape, abuse, medical misogyny

Whenever I read a new detail about the Gisele Pelicot case - I find myself increasingly enraged.

“Not all men” but also so many men. Her husband, her neighbour, men from all walks of life in and around her village. She was violated repeatedly for TEN years - drugged and assaulted by men her husband INVITED over to harm her.

She was then violated again by the medical profession when she repeatedly sought care for STIs, vaginal bruising, confusion, forgetfulness etc… and was told she was simply ‘getting older’. They could have helped her. They could have believed her and possibly discovered the abuse sooner. But they dismissed her as they dismiss so many women - especially disabled and elderly women.

Finally - the male mayor of her small town made the most callous and ridiculous remark about how it wasn’t really ‘that bad’ because she wasn’t killed and there were no children involved.

Men - I beg of you - don’t tell a rape victim it wasn’t ‘that bad’. Don’t downplay something you can’t possibly understand. She was repeatedly assaulted by over 70 men for a decade - all arranged by her husband. You can’t just ‘rebuild’ from that.

  19. Another wonderful person added to my Ages project, the 22nd person. Hopefully a couple more this week. starshumansnests.com/ages/

Much as each individual story is interesting and, hopefully the images are good too, they are all part of a wider project. It is about the social construction of age, which is largely harmful. Each participant is another example of someone, whatever age they happen to be, just being present - who and how they are just now. Do read what they have to say, the photos are vital of course, but they are only part of the process.

I'm hoping to gather more people and to stretch the age range of the participants and the diversity of body types. Get in touch if you'd like to join.
