  2. I took this photograph from the moving coach on the way down to Sligachan yesterday.

Sligachan (Scottish Gaelic: Sligeachan) is a small settlement on Skye, It is close to the Cuillin mountains and provides a good viewpoint for seeing them. It is situated at the junction of the roads from Portree, Dunvegan, and Broadford. It is therefore a place that all visitors and locals must pass through on the way north or south on the island

  5. Loch Coruisk (in Scottish Gaelic, Coire Uisg, the "Cauldron of Waters") is an inland fresh-water loch, lying at the foot of the Black Cuillin in the Isle of Skye, in the Scottish Highlands.

The northern end of the loch is ringed by the Black Cuillin, often wreathed in cloud. From the southern end the Scavaig River, only a few hundred yards long, discharges into a sea loch, Loch Scavaig. The loch is nearly 2 miles (3 kilometres) long and c. 400 yards (370 metres) wide.

  6. The island of Raasay is only a 20 minute ferry ride away from Sconser here on the Isle of Skye. We took a trip there last week. One highlight was the walk up the highest hill - Dun Caan.

The view from the top has a 360° panorama looking across to the mainland and over the sea to Skye. In the far distance we could see the Outer Hebrides. This view is looking over to the Cuillins.

  7. Another stunning day and once again the Cuillins have a cloud duvet this evening.

Contrary to popular belief this is not a swarm of midges... although an understandable mistake given recent days 🙄 🙂

  12. Our visitors seldom make the trip to Elgol to take a boat trip to the heart of the Cuillins. This painting is described as “A Loch north of Hadrian's Wall”. It is by Walter Severn (1830 – 1904), professionally a civil servant, known as a water-colour artist.

Loch Coruisk is an inland fresh-water loch, lying at the foot of the Black Cuillin in the Isle of Skye. The loch is reputed to be the home of a kelpie or water horse, a shape-shifting creature that can assume human form.

  13. Sometimes the light hereabouts takes my breath away. I was out walking on a road with no traffic - it goes across the moor and on to some forestry land - and no one else around. No signs of human habitation. An eternal scene. Been like this for eons. Will be here long after I’m gone.

  14. Snow fell on the Cuillins only last week. They looked like a Toblerone carton. Now the snow is nearly gone. It’s the time for new growth. Greenery has returned to the land. Springtime is really here. Joy Abounds! This is the view from Roag.

  15. “The far Cuillins are pullin' me away,
As take I wi' my crummack to the road.
The far Cuillins are puttin' love on me,
As step I wi' the sunlight for my load.”

You know when you get an ear worm? I don’t know if it’s the same thing exactly but I am frequently stirred to song when I see the Cuillins. I posted this song before. I won’t do it again in case you too get infected. It does have a great walking rhythm. I sing it to the dog as we head to the beach…

  16. Some days the peaks of the #Cuillins, twenty or so miles away from the village, are completely lost in the mist. At other times they appear hazy and distant. On a clear day with the slopes covered in high contrast snow they seem just out of reach.

  17. A fine week of weather continues... The road to the Cuillins*

*Not the main road... a little to the side of that.. 🙂

  18. “The far Cuillins are pullin' me away,
As take I wi' my crummack to the road.
The far Cuillins are puttin' love on me,
As step I wi' the sunlight for my load.”

‘The Road to the Isles’ a trad. Scots song

    Unusual words:
crummack - a shepherd's crook

You know what a crook is? Any walking stick will do. Nostalgia isn’t what it used to be. Harry Lauder used to sing this song. You can find him online. Here’s 1 min. 50 sec. of the tune:
