  5. “Loch Slapin” — Loch Slapin, near the village of Torrin, on the road to Elgol, Scotland.

One surprising thing about the Isle of Skye and other parts of northwest Scotland is that mountainous landscape can be barely above sea level. I think it is a combination of the northern latitude and the rocky geology that gives us alpine summits rising directly from the coast. So I was constantly surprised and sometimes confused when we would drive though hills, past peaks, then come around a bend and see an ocean inlet like Loch Slapin…more: gdanmitchell.com/2026/08/07/lo

  9. “Mountains, Clouds, and Shadows” — Clouds shadows drift across mountain terrain on the Isle of Skye.

I know I’ve mentioned this before, but one thing that impresses about the mountains of Scotland is that they have the appearance alpine terrain in my California High Sierra. There are few or no trees, the only vegetation is the sort that lies under your feet if you walk through it. The peaks are sharp and rugged and rocky. The entire landscape — mountains, streams, valleys — is laid bare. In the Sierra I must go well above 10,000′ to see this. In Scotland it begins barely above sea level…more: gdanmitchell.com/2026/08/02/mo

  15. “Neist Point Lighthouse” — Neist Point and lighthouse, Isle of Skye.

Our time on the Isle of Skye this past May combined visits to iconic locations. (I’m not against photographing icons that are new to me, or when conditions are extra special.) On this day we did a bit of both. Before we ended up here we had taken a long drive out to the tiny hamlet of Elgol. We returned, stopped for a quick dinner and then (the sun sets very late there in May) decided that Neist Point might be a reasonable objective…more: gdanmitchell.com/2026/07/24/ne

  17. “On The Road To Elgol” — Distant mountains and cloud-filled sky along the route to the Scottish village of Elgol.

We had several days to explore the Isle of Skye during or May visit to Scotland. We stayed at a somewhat off-the-grid location to the west of Portree. One day we did a popular route up the eastern coast toward the far northern reaches of the island, returning on the other side of that peninsula. Another day we headed south and east, visiting the Talisker distillery and, among other things, heading out to the remote village of Algol on the southwestern coast…more: gdanmitchell.com/2026/07/21/on

  20. “Marsco and Waterfall” — The peak of Marsco towers over a waterfall, Eas a’ Bhradain, Isle of Skye.

In case you haven’t heard, it is wet in Scotland. I knew this, having been there before, but coming from the relatively dry California climate, it is still quite a contrast. One thing that still takes me by surprise at first is the size of the streams and rivers that rise over short distances — and that they are everywhere. We stopped and photographed this roadside cascade as we were departing Skye to head north…more: gdanmitchell.com/2026/07/11/ma

  22. An early morning walk today down to Brothers Point (Rubha nam Bràithrean) near Staffin, on Skye. I singularly failed to find the dinosaur footprints…

I did come upon the dilapidation of the homestead of Ruaraidh Dhomhnaill a’ Chuirn whose family inhabited the house until the late 19th century. It’s a fixer-upper for sure.

  26. “Looking Toward Skye” — View toward the Isle of Skye, seen from Applecross Pass.

While Scotland’s Isle of Skye is, for good reason, a very popular place to visit, you can also find great views of the Isle and its mountains from along Scotland’s less-populated western coast. After our visit to Skye we headed north to Ullapool, and from there drove a long loop out to the village of Applecross. Before turning south toward that spot the route hugged the coastline, offering continuous views across the water to islands including Skye…more: gdanmitchell.com/2026/07/08/lo

  28. What is a Southtyrolean – addicted to #mountains – doing in #Scotland at the weekend?
    Well... hiking! 🤠

Ben Nevis (1345m) - highest mountain of Scotland and the UK
Sgùrr Alasdair (992m) - highest mountain on the Isle of Skye
The Storr (719m) - on top of the overrun Old Man of Storr (on #Skye )

And most of the time: being alone or with very few people! So nice! 🧘

To not harm the environment, I booked a small electric car ( #BEV ) for the trips.

  30. “Two Trees, Stone Wall” — Two trees in front of a stone wall, Isle of Skye.

While on the Isle of Skye this past May we stayed at an out-of-the-way lodge a few miles out on a gravel single track road along Loch Snizort Beag. We may have thought that we were at the ends of the earth when we first turned off the main road onto that track, but we came to appreciate the isolation, the views… and the sheep. They filled the pastures along the road and occasionally entered the roadway itself…more: gdanmitchell.com/2026/06/29/tw

  38. Drove close to 300 miles today on stunning roads as we drove to and around #Skye, up as far north as the roads go before you hit the sea, then looped around past Uig and back down to the Kyle of Lochalsh. Mum was happy. The A87 is spectacular.

We did not hike up to the Old Man of Storr because 1) neither of us are fit enough and 2) it was tourist hell even mid-morning.
