  5. This view is from the bench at the top of the rise after we walk up to the bridge over the Rosgil River and up the the lane. I see it daily and, of course, it varies enormously in its appearance and feeling. In England they have been suffering through a series of heatwaves caused by climate change.

On Skye we also have odd weather, but then we always do. This is high summer. Cool and wet. We have sunshine too and the combination is one that we enjoy.

  7. “Colorful Buildings, Portree, Scotland” — Colorful Portree waterfront building and reflections, Isle of Skye.

Just a few days after sharing a post in which I mentioned that I photograph a lot of subjects that are not icons… here is a photograph of an icon! This scene in the town of Portree, Isle of Skye is definitely in that category. I’m pretty sure that if you search (or as I hear I should now say, “search up”) “Portree" this scene will come up. It is an attractive row of colorful buildings, and their reflection in the water adds to the effect…more: gdanmitchell.com/2026/08/04/co

  9. A Highlands Cascade” — A small creek tumbes down a hillside, Isle of Skye.

I live in a place (San Francisco Bay Area of California) that isn’t exactly a desert, but it also is not particularly wet. Virtually all of our rainfall comes during a mostly-winter rainy season that lasts just a few months, and the rest of the years is generally dry. In fact, by this time of the year many of our hills and valleys have dried to a “California golden”color. So Scotland was quite a contrast for us! It rained at least a little on virtually every day we were there, and water — in rivers, streams, lochs, and the ocean — is everywhere…more: gdanmitchell.com/2026/07/31/a-

  11. Morning Mountains, Skye” — Soft atmosphere and clouds above the Cuillin Mountains, Isle of Skye.

On our final morning on the Isle of Skye back in May, as we drove to leave the island and head north, we came to an overlook of the Cuillin Mountains — or “Cuillin Hills” or “The Cuillins,” as they are sometimes known. These are high (for Scotland) and rugged peaks famed for their climbing opportunities. The range is composed of the higher Black Cuillins, rising to the right side of this image, and the Red Cuillins, which include the large peak at the left…more: gdanmitchell.com/2026/07/28/mo

  13. An early morning walk today down to Brothers Point (Rubha nam Bràithrean) near Staffin, on Skye. I singularly failed to find the dinosaur footprints…

I did come upon the dilapidation of the homestead of Ruaraidh Dhomhnaill a’ Chuirn whose family inhabited the house until the late 19th century. It’s a fixer-upper for sure.

  17. We have six new hens. White Sussex. Shy and a bit skittish. Only just beginning to lay.

“Chickens are remarkable, resilient creatures celebrated for their spunky personalities, nurturing instincts, and essential place in human history. Whether admired for their quirky antics in the barnyard, their handsome crowing, or their symbolic connection to fertility and motherhood, these feathered friends leave a lasting impact on our lives.”

The winds were quite the nice experience on the top ☺️

  26. This road looks quite different compared to two days ago when we were last here.

Before the blizzard and storm "dave" 😅

Power lines are still being repaired, though they are quite quick about it here.
