Since more than two weeks the RV Polarstern #SWOS expedition is now conducting research in the western Weddell Sea. The days are starting to get shorter while we are measuring L-band microwave brightness temperatures of sea ice to improve our satellite retrievals for the upcoming EU/ESA #CIMR mission.
-
Two weeks ago, our colleague Marcus gave an overview of the CIMR L2 Snow depth retrieval implemented within the L2PAD project on the European Space Agency - #ESA #CIMR Expert User Group workshop in Barcelona. Now we are addressing the valuable comments and feedback to improve the product. Another month till the detailed design review, let's go!

I will not be at #LPS25, Europe's largest 🛰️ Earth Observation conference, in Vienna this week.
But many of my good friends and colleagues will, including those from @osi_saf , #CCI (Climate Change Initiative), and #CIMR (the future satellite in my profile banner). Catch many of them at the #SeaIce session, but also #SoilMoisture and #SMOS15 sessions.
Enjoy the conference, while I enjoy some early vacation in Grenoble 😅.

@lavergnetho My pleasure.
Heard about #CIMR for the first time yesterday from your profile and now I’m looking forward too 🤩. -
@stephspace Ohh, I hadn't seen that video by ESA! Thanks for sharing. So much looking forward to the deployment video of the #CIMR mission in 2029/30.

This week we are in Copenhagen to discuss the implementation of level 2 algorithms for the upcoming #CIMR – Copernicus Imaging Microwave Radiometer #satellite. Thank you to #DMI for hosting us and #EU and #ESA for developing #CIMR #CIMRL2PAD

not "what on Earth" but "what in Space!" 😅
We are developing the prototype ground processor for the #CIMR 🛰️ mission (>= 2029).
All 20+ Polar Oceans products (including #SeaIce variables) and Global Land products (Soil Moisture, Snow, etc...) for the CIMR mission need documenting. Plus the documents to describe file formats, the software architecture, the future validation campaign 😂 , etc...
This is our Year 1 review with ESA, so many of the docs are still draft.

So next week there is a big #SeaIce #DataAssimilation workshop hosted by the European Space Agency in Frascati (Italy).
I'm one of the organizers, and I'll be there 🙋 with #CIMR 🛰️ and #CCI content. Who will I meet there?

@lavergnetho
That's exciting! May they be nice to you and offer delicious cookies!
If I may be so bold, I have a few questions wrt satellite use.
Is #Sentinel #CIMR going to be a dedicated satellite or does the device go piggy-back on another?
When new measurement devices are introduced, is it part of the plan to later consolidate satellite use, ie put more and more devices on a single sat where compatible, once the first of their carriers get de-orbited and replaced?
What is the weight & life expectancy of the new CIMR #satellite and what is its decommissioning procedure – burn up or shoot outside Earth's orbit? You probably guessed it: my questions relate to #sustainability in general, to space debris, and most of all: the impact of burnt-up satellite material on chemistry and climate.
An institution like #ESA can set the tone so rogue, unregulated actors like #Starlink might soon be reigned-in before their bad biz plan lets 27t of satellite material burn up – every single day! -
So excited/humbled to have #ESA and my partner institutes in #Oslo this week to discuss #CIMR LEVEL-2 products!
#CIMR is an upcoming #Sentinel satellite that will help us monitor the #Earth and its #Climate in the polar regions.
We are at the start of an exciting 4-year activity, the #L2PAD, to prepare #OpenSource algorithms and products for this satellite. Can't wait to meet the team, it will be the first time I meet some of them in person.

#ESA, the European #Space Agency, made a cool video about the #CIMR satellite.
#CIMR is the #Copernicus Imaging Microwave Radiometer. It will fly as one of the future @CopernicusEU #Sentinels from early 2029. It will be a game-changer for observing #SeaIce and the #polar oceans.
I have been heavily involved in the preparations for this satellite. I'll be happy to answer questions you might have about the video. Just ask them below 👇. #CIMRL2PAD

2️⃣ things I am particularly looking forward to:
1) The satellite is not flying yet. It is being built. This means we have to use simulated data to prepare our algorithms. That's a first for several of us.
2) We want to be as open as possible, and aim at open-source software and algorithm. Give us some time to make this happen (learning by doing). #opendata #openscience #opensource

📢 We have a new project 🥳 !
Our bid was selected: we now have 4 years (2023-2027) to prepare algorithms and build a Ground Processor Prototype (GPP) for the #Copernicus / #ESA #CIMR satellite 🛰️ .
Of course there is a lot to do: we have 20+ variables to cover and all must be in place before the satellite launch in 2028/29.
Anyway, I'm honoured and thrilled to lead this team of 12 partners.
Let's go #CIMRL2PAD !

Today I am at the Norwegian Space Agency for a workshop on two future #Copernicus satellite missions: #CIMR (passive microwave) and #CRISTAL (altimeter).
We will discuss how #Norway can best prepare to use these satellites effectively when they fly in the late 2020s/early 2030s.
It takes time to prepare 😅.

Similar methodologies have been applied for Climate Data Records in the ESA CCI Sea Ice project (SSMIS) and can be adapted for the future Copernicus mission #CIMR

Tore Wulf (DMI) presents results from the ASIP sea-ice classification, using a CNN to combine #SAR and Passive Microwave data. Very relevant in preparation for #ROSEL and #CIMR. #IICWGDA11

@jgomezdans @trappmartin In Europe, the efforts on satellite-based retrieval have continued at a steady pace with the #FiduceEO project. #CCI teams and even new satellite missions (#CIMR, #TRUTH,...) try to embrace the #FiducEO approach all the way to geophysical products (Level-2).
It is hard, and sometimes an overkill, but with time we will get there.

An recent example from #CCI :

I am exhausted at the end of two full days of #CIMR Mission Advisory Group meeting for ESA 😵.
But it is so nice to see the mission progressing, and to shift our focus slowly from the satellite itself towards the data processing and expected geophysical products.Designing and building such a satellite requires so many bright people, and I am humbled to be bringing my small contribution as a #SeaIce scientist.
Now have a nice week-end !
-
@jgomezdans Indeed Jose ! #CIMR will record passive microwave brightness temperatures at L, C, X, Ku, and Ka.
More info on #CIMR at https://cimr.eu

AAAAAANNNNNNNND DONE !
My slides for reporting about our ESA-funded study towards prototype #CIMR Level-2 algorithms are ready 😀 .
We have the 18th #CIMR Mission Advisory Group tomorrow and Friday at ESTEC (and online).
For those who don't know, #CIMR is the #Copernicus Imaging Microwave Radiometer, a Passive Microwave satellite mission to fly in the Sentinel family from 2028/29.
I am part of the expert group advising ESA on the mission and this is such a thrill !
