  4. 💻 I took several completely independent datasets and "pitted" them against each other. One of the results is shown in this chart: the more "concrete" (roads, buildings, parking lots) my machine learning model identified in a community, the higher the surface temperature recorded by the thermal sensor.

    🔥 The result: Data from different sources confirm one another. The difference in surface temperature between "green" and "concrete" residential areas averages 8–10°C throughout the summer. On certain days, this gap is likely even wider.

    📉 This chart shows only established residential communities. If industrial zones were included, the trend would be even more dramatic. While modeling errors certainly exist, the overall physical pattern is undeniable.

    This PCA composite brings out contrasts between lithologies, structural domains, drainage patterns, and surface materials, highlighting features that are nearly invisible in standard RGB representations.

    And yes — it also happens to look stunning.

  13. My experiment with land-cover classification for Calgary using satellite imagery and with a machine-learning model trained on data from another continent.

    The results turned out surprisingly good — most classes transferred almost perfectly.
    The only noticeable shift was the Forest class: tree and shrub vegetation in the source region differs from Calgary’s, so the model mapped it conservatively here.

    Still, the general structure of the landscape was captured very well, and community-level land-cover profiles look consistent.

  22. Concerning the L.A. wildfires, here is a quick view of #InSAR coherence evolution between #Copernicus #ESA #Sentinel1 images of December 16 2024, December 28 2024 and January 9 2025.

    Burnt area between last two dates are characterized by strong and abrupt coherence losses.
    This gives an idea of the burnt surface in a twelve days delay.

    С тех пор, как я рассказывал на хабре про мой открытый проект спутниковой интерферометрии PyGMTSAR (Python InSAR библиотека) для обработки и анализа радарных данных спутников Sentinel-1, прошло много времени и сегодня PyGMTSAR представляет собой наиболее мощный инструмент среди всех открытых InSAR. Притом, PyGMTSAR действительно общедоступен, поскольку не требует скачивать огромные данные, устанавливать программное обеспечение и так далее — достаточно просто открыть ссылки на Google Colab в браузере и посмотреть и запустить готовые примеры или адаптировать их для своей территории и области интереса. Предлагаемые Google Colab примеры включают в себя создание отдельных интерферограмм для анализа результатов сейсмических событий (землетрясений) и наводнений, создание рельефа, анализ серий интерферограмм для мониторинга оползней и проседаний грунта. И все эти возможности доступны в один клик онлайн на Google Colab и в Docker контейнерах. Для профессионалов предоставляется полностью программируемая среда для выполнения InSAR задач и интерактивной 3D визуализации, доступная на Google Colab, в Docker контейнерах, на GitHub Action runners, и, конечно, на локальных компьютерах и на облачных хостах.

  25. Do you remember the Brunt iceshelf that broke out in January 2023?
    I checked where this 1500 km2 iceberg is for now.
    I used #Copernicus #Sentinel1 images to follow it on its journey.
    The last image on which it is visible is dated April 13. No other orbital track allow to observe it anymore with Sentinel1.
    So, I checked for #SAOCOM data and found two additional images acquired in May 5 an 21.
    But since then, it seems that A81 iceberg is out of sight from any #SAR satellite.
    So... Good by A81

    It's about #fracking induced displacements in the #VacaMuerta oil extraction fields .
    Grafically its nice.
    Scientifically, its interesting.
    With respect to human impact on the Earth, its worrying.
    Displacements were measured using #ESA #Copernicus 🛰️ #Sentinel1 #timeseries in Ascending mode.
