I've often been asked if I wanted to produce some #ttrpg material based on my research of German #folklore , and in fact I have often thought of that myself. Considering my time constraints, this is currently nothing more than a fantasy - but it is fun to think about.
One important question is the setting. There are two main opinions:
(a) An entirely fictional "fantasy counterpart" version of Germany - the approach taken by #Brancalonia and #WFRP .
(b) A real world historical period, but with added fantastical elements.
For (b), I think the aftermath of major wars would be best, since that would offer the most opportunities for stereotypical "roving bands of adventurers" as player characters, with the PCs likely being war veterans (the war themselves would likely be too bleak for much of the folkloric whimsy).
The best periods I can think of are the aftermaths of the Thirty Years' War and the Napoleonic Wars. The latter would be more authentic to the folk tales, since most of the folk tales were written down in the 19th century. The former, on the other hand, would allow for more fantastic stories, since they were set longer ago. But I do think the setting should be within the Modern Era, and not the Middle Ages, since the folklore would have been too different back then.
What are your thoughts on this? How would you conceptualize a setting based on German folklore?
Something that does for German #folklore what #Brancalonia did for Italian folklore.

As I am trying to learn #Italian and am an enthusiast of both #TTRPG and #folklore , getting into #Brancalonia is an obvious choice - although I know that most of the cultural references will pass me by until I have a firmer understanding of #Italy and its culture.
The books have been a fun read so far, although I am not a fan of the publisher's decision to release this setting for #DnD5e , and limit character progression to levels 1-5. I can _understand_ why they did it - this game has the biggest user base of all, after all. But if I were to run a campaign for this setting, I'd probably use #WFRP , which does "a ragtag bunch of misfits constantly getting into trouble" exceedingly well.

I love the concept of Brancalonia (especially since I am now trying to learn #Italian ), but using #DnD for it is just so _wrong_. Though I understand why they did it.
But WFRP should be a much better fit for "roving bands of never-do-wells".

Kurz mal ausprobiert: #Brancalonia von @systemmatters ist wirklich witzig und zudem gut zu spielen, die passende Stimmung entsteht fast wie von selbst. Viel weniger blutig als das das original #dnd5e, dafür aber um einiges lustiger. Tolle Klassen, wundervolle Welt und immer noch vollkompatibel - toll, wenn ein Spiel die Erwartungen voll erfüllt. #pnpde #dnd #dnddeutsch
So, nun habe ich es auch (endlich?) getan und das deutsche #Brancalonia bei @systemmatters vorbestellt. Hätte nicht gedacht, dass ich noch einmal ein #dnd5e Produkt kaufen will, aber hier konnte ich dann doch nicht nein sagen, weil das Ding schlicht so cool und anders ist und Acheron Games aus Italien einfach wunderschöne Spiele machen.
