Walking in the temperate rainforest of the pacific northwest.... The young green hues of the #bigleafmaple captivated me. The vanilla leaf were in flower. And yellow violets and fringe cups. But I kept tipping my head upward to admire the trees. Malahat, Pauquachin, Tsartlip, Tsawout and Tseycum Territory.

The recent rains brought lush, mossy scenes to the Big Leaf Maples on this winter evening. The backdrop of mixed Redwood Forest in late afternoon adds depth to the feathery moss and bright display of licorice ferns.

Did the Big Leaf Maple Syrup workshop, run by the Rainier Institute (uw.edu / wsu.edu). Very cool experience, got a tour of the experimental forest and did tastings of the syrup from the local production site. Big leaf maple syrup is very different from the ‘regular’ Sugar Maple syrup- chocolate and molasses flavors!! Can’t wait to tap our own trees- now is the time!
