  1. @Slash909uk @phlash Oh! I had forgotten I had these online. These are from when we built Genie Internet for Cellnet - Originally on the Telex floor (where Wireplay was), and then we had to move it up to the 5th or 6th onto my office floor, where the corporate networks hung out. This was the install record, sadly taken on a 1999 digital camera, sorry! I had a skim, there's nothing in there that would be considered classified these days.

The Celnet Genie service, which we designed as an "ISP in a box", was pretty amazing, really, especially for an essentially free ISP.

Also, it's one of those odd jobs where you end up as both lead applications architect, systems manager, server builder, removal dude, and underfloor cable rat and crimper in the same project. I feel jobs like that in big corporations tend not to exist any more.

  6. Gig Review: Cory Marks / Big Iron – The Cathouse, Glasgow (18th March 2025)

Why don't I go to the Cathouse more often for gigs? It's a cracking venue with awesome staff and above-decent sound. Tonight it was playing host to country rocker Cory Marks, with local-ish support supplied by Edinburgh's Big Iron.

  9. Future of #BigIron: #TelumII and #Spyre
#IBM’s big #mainframe props up almost every key industry world-wide due to features such as 9x9 (99.999999%) uptime, security, and hardware focused on database and transaction processing.
#Telum became centerpiece of 4th gen #LinuxOne – a series of #Linux systems purely for z architecture. Another big focus, for #z15 and LinuxOne, was built-in #AI engine with every chip, allowing focused models to run alongside critical workloads.

  14. I kinda love how Marty Robbins' #BigIron has become a low-key nerd anthem, entirely on account of Fallout: #NewVegas.

(Which is the best Fallout, for the record).

  18. @DavittoKun @landley also we do it for #fun and maybe even #lulz to some degree:

I'm basically self-taught in regards to anything #IT and I think being humble about things is the way to go.

I did start OS/1337 asking myself "What is the simplest OS where I as a (#Linux & #Unix-esque only - cuz I don't do #Windows!) #Sysadmin could do my job under?" and turns out in therms what isn't "#BigIron" aka. somewhere remote, all I need is the modern incarnation of a #DEC-Style #Terminal like a #VT320 but with like #OpenSSH to get connected...
