The Celnet Genie service, which we designed as an "ISP in a box", was pretty amazing, really, especially for an essentially free ISP.
Also, it's one of those odd jobs where you end up as both lead applications architect, systems manager, server builder, removal dude, and underfloor cable rat and crimper in the same project. I feel jobs like that in big corporations tend not to exist any more.

The Maryland Transportation Authority Police apparently noticed the ship losing power and rushed to block off traffic before the ship hit.
They also noted there was a work crew on the bridge and looks like they made initial notifications to try and warn the foreman of the crew. Sadly, they obviously weren't successful per scanner traffic.

On my last day of work before retirement last year I took some photos in Baltimore. This one is from the 8th floor of the parking garage facing southeast toward the harbor. In the center is Orioles Park at Camden Yards and in the background is the Francis Scott Key Bridge which is no more. It collapsed March 26, 2024 after a cargo ship struck one of the piers.

If you don’t know, the Key Bridge was a toll bridge so if the message was passed, the opportunity to close down traffic relatively quickly was possible and clearly took place.

Talk about Effective Communications. The MD governor reported the ship called a mayday and the traffic going onto the bridge was stopped before the collapse.
No sense of how much time passed or when the mayday was called in relation to the collapse, but it couldn't have been very long.

The Key Bridge collapse is a disaster for Baltimore. Guessing all the shipping will be rerouted to the other major East Coast ports. But those jobs will be lost to Baltimore. Not to mention the logistical nightmare of rerouting all that traffic.
Long-term, they’ll rebuild that bridge, a long time coming, and there will be a lot of jobs that go along with that.

Waking up to find out the #KeyBridge collapsed. Tragic for the human cost, surreal to lose an iconic landmark.
The bridge had been around since 1977. I have to wonder if the designers then didn't anticipate the size of ships today, or if there was some other systemic cause.

The images from the maritime disaster in Baltimore’s harbor this week certainly caused a collective gasp from everyone who saw it. The quantity and volume of gasps have continued in the relatively short time span since the Dali hit the Francis Scott Key Bridge. As we’ve heard how costly and much time it will take to demo the wreckage, reopen the harbor, and rebuild the bridge, the magnitude of the hard work needed to navigate the challenges ahead is hard to really grasp, but we know that those challenges can be overcome.
Even so, this bridge collapse and the reaction to it seems analogous, yet in an almost incongruent way, to the slow motion collapse we’re living through of all of the guardrails we’ve built up in American society.
Most of those guardrails already lie in a heap of debris and the rest seem to be hanging on by mere threads just waiting to unravel. Frankly, I waver back and forth wondering if it’s possible to rebuild those guardrails or not. Physcial things can be replaced. Societies built on common understandings, traditions, rules, and experiences, not so much. Once the keystones begin to decay the arches eventually fall.
Bringing back what we have already lost will require a rebuild as substantial, if not more so, than what needs to happen in the Baltimore harbor. And nothing rebuilt is ever the same as what it replaces. Society’s guardrails have been as forever crumpled as what remains of the Key Bridge.
As Rick Wilson is famously fond of saying, Everything Trump Touches Dies (ETTD) and the casualty list is long: the media, the justice system, Congress, political parties, civil discourse, social media, and on it goes. What isn’t dead has already been infected beyond cure. And watching those willingly accept their own demise is as twisted as is this sentence describing it.
We were far too complacent with those guardrails, far too passive when we first felt them begin to erode, and far too comfortable to push course corrections or implement further protections.
You never think about the ground underneath you until it collapses and takes you with it.
