  1. The most common bird around our place is the Sulphur Crested Cockatoo. Quite destructive at times and always keen to get a drink. Here, you can almost hear them calling "Heh, fill it up!"

  4. Are they having morning tea? Is it a family conference? Or just a get together by the Noisy Miners at the local bird bath….?

  6. Some years back, this Cockatiel flew in… It had obviously been a pet as it was happy being around people. And then… one day it flew out again, no doubt looking to delight some other people.

  8. A regular visitor to our house, but not to have a drink at the bowl! Usually, they sit on a branch or the washing line, looking for breakfast or lunch. And what a wonderful name… KOOKABURRA. [photo by Jane Taylor]

  10. A common sight around Sydney suburban areas, the Ibis. Of course, properly known as the “Bin Chicken” for their habit of exploring rubbish bins… They have a sentimental connection for me because of the tobacco my father smoked in the Netherlands with that weird bird on the packet…

  17. The birdbath doesn’t just attract birds… We do occasionally get Wallabies in the neighbourhood and it was nice to capture one on the BirdCam! Linda @linlovesart, should do a month of Australian marsupials!

  19. Our European settlers have much to answer for, calling a bird by a name which reminds them of “home”. Thankfully we have Currawongs even though some people still confuse them with Magpies, which in turn are not the same as the European Magpie. Phew… We love the Currawong name…

  27. A rare bird to be seen at the “Bowl”, but one which is famous for being heard is the Superb Lyrebird. Ours used to be expert at mimicking a ringing desk phone ( when we still had them). Search for “lyrebird calls” on YouTube and you’ll get many examples of them mimicking other birds and power tools(!).

  29. You rarely see just one Noisy Miner and groups often dominate the birdbath. They are pretty cheeky and never sit still, jealous of other birds wanting a sip or a dip.

  31. The tree behind our house. It’s not particularly beautiful, but we love it and so do the local birds.
A couple of years ago, we “inherited” a bird bath and found a place for it near the tree.
We added a “BirdCam” to keep an eye on the birds frequenting it. It automatically captures visitors, day and night.
The rest of this month’s images are mostly from this BirdCam…

  33. Good morning Fedi friends. Well that was one warm night & one more hot day & night to go. It was 26c when I woke up just after 6am, opened up & turned off the aircon. It won’t be off for too long though as at 9am now it’s already hit 31c & will reach 43c as its last hurrah. So I’ll be shutting up again shortly & probably have the aircon fan on for a little while before I need it on cooling. I have my washing out & that won’t take long to dry & will do all my towels for the same reason after I’m showered & ready for my day.
I’ve found out what those little birds are that have been flitting around my garden at dawn. They’re New Holland Honeyeaters & very cute. There seems to be an awful lot of them around here atm.
Not going anywhere today, nor doing very much at all except for some general housework but that’s it for today really.
    Have a great #Saturday everyone hope you all have a cool & safe day 🌻. #Weather #AussieSummer #Heatwave #AussieBirds #Garden

  34. I was standing in the vegetable garden wondering if the spinach was ready for picking when I glanced left - and saw these two tiny New Holland Honeyeaters babies looking at me.

Too new to the world to be frightened of me, they just sat there while i took this photo.

  35. @lunalein @bookstodon For nonfiction, my favorite Aussie book is Where Song Began by Tim Low. So much writing about birds is focused on the northern hemisphere that it was great to read about all the wonders of Australian birds. They buck a number of trends and have some unique qualities.

  37. @tessa_murray Thank you so much for that picture! I became a birder when I lived in Australia, and I miss all my starter birds so much now that I'm no longer there. Rainbow Bee-eaters and Willy Wagtails were some of my favorites.

  39. CW: Nature red in tooth and claw - and beak

Just saw one of our local Kookaburras, the one I often take pics of, beating a baby bird to death in a tree in the backyard.

Then he and his mate sat on my lawn with its remains to picnic.

    🤢

No, I did not take a family photo album pic of the event.
