I’m really excited about this feature in my #3dprinted #astromech the main body contains a Pi Zero W 2 but the head is an independent system running a Pi Pico W. The sound files are played in the body but the head is able to react to the sound and flash the mouth by listening for a message that is broadcast over MQTT.

Tonight I spent some time weathering my baby astromech. I think I over did it on the dome a bit so I might need to bring back the orange parts a bit. Tomorrow I’ll be putting all the #electronics back inside and finishing up the last bits of code to get the mouth to flash in time to the audio (which sounds easy but the head is running a separate microcontroller to the body!)

I've been sick with a cold since Wednesday. I'm starting to feel better, but since I'm stuck inside, I did some more stuff with R2.

What a journey this has been! R2-D2 is finally wired and moving about! I'm so proud! There's a lot of work yet to do, but I think for now I'll rest the next few days.

Ok, one day later and I've finished wiring up R2-D2's dome. Barring any bad cables, of which I'm sure there are a few, I can tackle the body next. That's far less complex. So I think it'll go faster.

So much R2-D2 progress over the past week. I've spent time learning CAD so I can make all the electrical standoffs. I also designed a speaker mount that turned out so perfectly that I couldn't be happier. Today I've been wiring up the dome. It's not the cleanest, but it's mine.

Today I drew up a wiring diagram for R2 and started laying out components on the flip down electronics panel inside the body. I have a rough idea now how it'll all work.

A local skating rink on a foggy night provides a perfect landing site for one of these. Well, near perfect, those lamp wires above are a problem.
