  1. I used a painting technique that I saw in Japanese model magazines. Recently it has become fashionable to use thin aqueous paint with uneven and slightly visible brush strokes to capture a "80s Box art painting" look. (I also like the "¥100 shop" trend)

Japanese Mecha modellers have quite different approaches compared to Western Mini painters.

A simple tutorial in Japanese is here, but it's quite easy to understand with machine translation:

  6. I tried sponge painting the base coat with cheap acrylics and a make up sponge. It turned out really well. The finer holes of the make up sponge gave it a matt finish and nice texture to use as a base. It looks good for cheap materials.

There was some modifications that I had to do to make painting easier. Cut a slot into the hole in the hip so the torso could fit in after painting.

  11. Finished painting a Bandai 1/100 Destroid Tomahawk that I painted up as a Battletech WHM-6R Warhammer. Still need to put on decals and then a small bit of blending and weathering.

My potato camera doesn't capture how nice the paint job is.

This is the Bandai reissue of the original 1988 Imai Tomahawk kit, which was imported by 20th Century Imports for the Robotech Defenders line. Apparently Battletech used the Nichimo 1/200 kits that were half the size of this one.
