  1. Lest We Forget

“Australian paratrooper Warrant Officer Class Two Lachlan Muddle killed during training exercise at Jervis Bay”

Today, we also remember those who lost their lives away from the battelfields. RIP WO2 Muddle. We will remember them.

  7. I've seen a fair number of random "I support BRS" comments lately. A bit of a plague, especially around ANZAC day.

As someone who has served I have rather strong opinions on the matter. Primarily, that this is a judicial issue and it's for the courts to decide. Albo is correct in refusing to comment.

A lot of people also need to come to terms with the fact that someone can be a war hero and a war criminal at the same time.

In case anyone was under any illusions about the intentions of the 'hate speech' laws passed by federal and state governments in recent months, consider the official governmental and media responses to the campaign of hateful racist booing of Aboriginal elders at ANZAC Day ceremonies around the continent today.

In Gadigal/Sydney, Naarm/Melbourne, Tarndanya/Adelaide and Boorloo/Perth, organised groups of racist hecklers jeered and booed as Aboriginal elders (many of them also ADF veterans) gave a Welcome to Country or Acknowledgement of Country. The campaign was organised by some of the same far-right white supremacists behind the recent 'March for (White) Australia' rallies.

In the flurry of media reporting and comments from politicians about how disgraceful the booing was, or saying how booing "misses the point", I have not managed to find a single article mentioning the obvious application of the new draconian hate speech laws to this very situation. Nor did I see a single call for prosecution from a politician. (Nor calls for politicians who have encouraged such hate to resign.)

The double standard has always been obvious. But at times like this, it is utterly glaring.

  19. April 25 is ANZAC day.

Taking time to remember the heroes, and those who did their duty, and the sacrifices they made.

And the time to curse those who lead us needlessly into wars and conflicts, staying safe while causing the deaths of others.

I pray for peace, and for justice.

    #ANZAC

  20. Today is #ANZAC day, the 25th April. On this day, 111 years ago, the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps landed at Gallipoli. A relatively minor (and disastrous) campaign for British forces, but the first big battle Australia & New Zealand were involved in as nations. As such, it is a somberly commemorated event each year.

    Lest we forget.

While I haven't written up a coin confirmed to be related to the battle, I do have a 1902-10 penny turned into "art". Possibly trench art? Possibly just done by someone before or after the war, but either way, still an interesting piece: coinofnote.com/1902-10-uk-penn

  21. Anzac Day always brings up a lot of emotion. While there is a lot of symbolism to the events, it is at heart a funeral service. In the moments between the Last Post and the Reveille, we remember our dead, as well as those who returned wounded — permanently changed by their experiences in ways both visible and unseen. We call to mind also the sacrifices their families made; of places left empty in homes and hearts.

The commitment we made to remember the fallen is part of a bargain that every service member understands. Those who serve their country don’t do so seeking money, fame, or power. They don’t get to choose the causes for which they take up arms. But they know if they are called on to sacrifice themselves for their comrades, their country, and their cause, then those who are left will ensure their names and their memory live on.

It’s heartening to see Anzac Day services go from strength to strength, the next generation of Kiwis taking up the challenge of keeping these memories alive. Young people, some wearing the medals of their tūpuna, showing up in their thousands to the funeral services of men and women long since dead, who they did not personally know, to show our collective gratitude for that sacrifice.

    We will remember them.

We went to the #PigAndWhistle at #Trentham.

    Verrrry nice place!

As we arrived about 5 cars left. We went inside & we were the only customers.

By the time our meals arrived there were about 50 people there.

I guess fresh from #Anzac ceremonies.

Racism isn’t an inherent trait in humans. It’s a learned behaviour, culturally embedded from emotional fragility and fear of ‘Others’ (those unlike oneself). From my view, the fight against #racism is an educational issue, both formal (schooling) and informal (home life). Public social campaigns on what passes for main stream media would go a long way to fight this — for anyone who remembers the success of the road litters campaign: ‘Don’t be a tosser…’

The problem is that #Australian racism is too often ‘normalised’ and too easily dismissed as an historical artefact that characterises ockerism. It needs to be called out for what it is, by all of us when we see/hear/read it. It’s our job. The job of all who live on this borrowed land.

  34. As the ANZAC Circus once again rolls into town, it is worth remembering the words of
Wilfred Owen, the poet who himself died in WWI. This is his poem "Dulce et Decorum est"

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs,
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots,
    But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
    Of gas-shells dropping softly behind.

Gas! GAS! Quick, boys!—An ecstasy of fumbling
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time,
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling
And flound’ring like a man in fire or lime.—
Dim through the misty panes and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.

In all my dreams before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams, you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
    His hanging face, like a devil’s sick of sin;
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,—
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est
    Pro patria mori.
