CW: dreams, long covid
my main long covid medication (low dose naltraxone) causes me to have super-vivid, long, nightly dreams, thatI remember nearly every second of right?
before this, I had maaaybe one dream every month or three, which made dreams hard to remember because they were so far apart, though distinct...
and now, it's hard to remember which dream I had yesterday because I could fill a damn library with the sheer number of them :not_like_this: (and what's worse, I've had multiple different dreams with entirely different styles and storylines use the same environment e.g. an old house I grew up in)

Tis my birthday in 5 days and after turning 50 last year I've decided that each birthday now will go backwards, so in 5 days I'll be "49", it may break the space-time-continuum but I'll see how I go.. when I get back down to "20" I'll start going back up again 🎂 👍 🥂

I have mixed feeling about ANZAC Day. I recognise the sacrifice and suffering that wars have brought on so many New Zealanders. My grandfather fought in WWI and wore his medals proudly. I have my father's medals framed alongside his insignia. For a long time ANZAC Day was a form of collective grieving, as Will de Cleene put it, and was a real part of our 'nation building', our sense of identity. But something happened in the 1980's. Young people started attending dawn services. I detected that the myth making, the iconography changed somehow in ways I can't quite explain. It has become almost performative patriotism to wear a poppy. And many New Zealanders started prefering ANZAC Day over Waitangi Day as our 'national' day. No difficult conversations about the past required today! It seems that for many to remember the sacrifices that ANZAC Day commemorates, means to forget other aspects of our colonial past. Anyway, just some of my thoughts this morning.

What Casino Movies Get Right and Wrong About Non-GamStop Casinos UK
Most casino films draw on their audience through visually stunning table scenes, fast-paced action, and larger-than-life characters. The way we perceive gaming comes in part from those types of films, such as Casino and Ocean's Eleven. However, most of these portrayals exaggerate many aspects of the gaming experience....

If I do nothing else in this life, I want to impress upon as many people as I can the importance of words. I know they're easy to throw around... "they're just words", some will say...
But words have meaning, history, baggage, context, *consequences* :frog_sus:
While I don't believe magic exists in our world, I get why many magic systems are based on words, whether that be incantations, curses, true names, or whatever else...
Whether they be multisyllabic monstrosities from the depths of a thesaurus or internet slang, words have real weight to them, real effects on real people :cat_frown:
Using words is a responsibility, and the more we forget that, the more harm they can cause :jellyfish_sad:
p.s. I guess the thing I forgot to mention initially is that acknowledging this and letting empathy guide your use of words is generally the best idea :bear_shrug:

#Avgeek #musings: Back in December, Alaska Airlines management answered questions saying Hawaiian's A321neo subfleet was too small and either needed to double or go to zero. With A321neos being all relatively new, it was hard to imagine where they might find 20 or so of them.
Then this hit the news. Now it isn't hard to imagine where they'd find 21 of them. The question is if any airlines feel like spending to snap up the planes, even out of a bankruptcy sale. Dunno. #aviation #travel #business

CW: Project Hail Mary - thoughts and spoilers
We went to see this the other evening and I have been thinking about it a lot.
First because I went into the film knowing really nothing about it (other than it was in space), and about 10 minutes in, I thought, ah, so Andy Weir likes to write books about 'man alone in space'.
But then as I got into the movie, I realised that the man-alone-in-space theme is only part of it. He's not glorifying individualistic crusade, he's showing us how much we need each other. We need our friends. Without them, we are lost and we'll die.
I've only ever read/seen one other work of Andy Weir (The Martian) and I'm using this limited sample of two works to decide that Andy Weir really likes writing about friendships, and he does it REALLY WELL.
I love this because friendships and connections are one of the things I explore in my own writing, because I love it so much, and I want to be better at writing about those relationships -- the true, deep affection you feel for your friends and the way you can support each other. In the film, it's literally about life and death but also in real life, our connections are life and death. Loneliness kills us.
That's not to say that romantic love is completely ignored. I felt a pang of grief when Rocky's talking about his mate, and Grace makes a joke about the length of time they've been together (over 100 years) and Rocky says something like, 'It's not long enough.' Because of course it isn't. For our closest people, our closest loves, it's never long enough. We always want more.
I also appreciated the way that Rocky and Grace are quite evenly matched, intellectually. Of course they are, because their civilisations have both sent them out to find a solution to the problem, but I like the emphasis on how difference does not equal inferior.
Anyway, I will likely watch this film again, and probably read the book too. It's not perfect, because it is art made by humans, and we are not perfect. But I loved the characters a lot, and I loved the friendship a lot, and it made me feel better about the world and our capacity to connect with each other, whoever that other may be.

New blog post up:
https://strangelyentangled.com/blog/musings-80s-hardware/
Musings on Saturday morning trips to computer stores in the #1980s, and how today's tech just lacks the personality that computers back then had.
I want to change that (for myself) with a modern #cyberdeck that evokes some of that 1980s personality.

CW: social justice, preventing lateral violence
"The moment someone believes their mission exempts them from reflection, they stop being a force for good." ~Loose Threads (Luke) youtube video link
This line was uttered in the context of analysing Ghibli villains that, in other contexts, might have been the hero, but it seems to explain my experience of seeing people purportedly fighting for social justice commit lateral violence :cat_think: Often, they will have some sort of actual track record, but have teetered off the path, or be dismissive of others, or have a world view that, because they are marginalised, they are incapable of being the one doing the marginalisation.
We all grow up in societies that marinate us in their bigotries, and unless it's concerning a bigotry you're directly targetted by, it takes conscious, often life-long effort to undo those effects and be a force for positive change.
In that pursuit, self-examination and reflection are a key ingredient that drives everything else. Without it, knowledge is difficult to find and even more difficult to absorb. Empathy will lack the knowledge to drive it to positive action. Even empathy may become worn down by the cruelties of the world.
I know "check yourself becore you wreck yourself" is beyond meme status at this point, but it points yo this same truth: continued self-reflection with unclouded eyes is paramount to continue to change the world for the better :hug_love:

Presence
Wouldn’t it be nice…
To arrive with something
Made by hand
A page where colors once
Listened to your breath …
A small painting carrying a piece of your day
Not bought, but felt, and gently given …Wouldn’t it be nice…
To gift a folded note, written slowly
With words that sat beside
Your heart for a while
Ink becoming warmth in
Someone else’s hands
A letter that lingers longer
Than any object …Wouldn’t it be nice…
To bring a pressed flower
From a walk you loved
Held between pages like a
Secret of the earth
A moment of stillness
Wrapped in paper
A memory, passed from you to them …Wouldn’t it be nice…
To offer a jar filled with tiny intentions
Little lines of hope, of courage, of light
So on heavy days, they can open one
And find you there, in a sentence …Wouldn’t it be nice…
If our gifts carried pieces of our presence
Instead f things that fade
Without a story
A drawing, a word, a fragment of soul
Simple, and somehow, enough …#roksanatales

Sometimes I think of mildly lame superpowers I’d like to have, since I don’t deserve really powerful ones. I wish I could deflate someone’s tire(s) so they would always slowly go flat. I’d never cause a dangerous accident. Just an inconvenience. Or, that I could project my wise ass remarks at other drivers into their car/brain so they could hear me insult their poor driving skills/inconsiderate driving. Of course these always come to me when driving. #superPower #musings

the last line of this post has me thinking...
I know so many people that seem to have this... thirst for life, a drive to live and do, to build or discover, and I've always been envious of those people :cat_frown: it's always felt like I don't have a goal, that I'm not building anything up throughout my life, that I'm just sort of waffling through life :cat_think:
and while the whole 30 years of being an egg (alongside the ADHD) was the cause of a lot of that, even in the years since transitioning, I still felt like I lacked drive to do things :bear_shrug:
but... you know how we don't realise just how much a medication is helping unless we forget a dose? and then you take it and you remember "holy fuck, right, that's how it feels like without meds :neofox_nervous_sweat: "?
that's how it feels now :frog_blush: being able to perform for people, being able to see people happy or comforted by my performances... it's often not tangible, it's not something you can point to later like an engineer designing a bridge, or a game dev making a game, or a researcher pointing to a discovery, but...
comforting people and making people happy with my performances is my purpose in life, and I don't think it's ever been clearer to me :eevee_joy:

Widening the aperture…
Nobody signs up for monotony. It just… happens.
One. Habit. At. A. Time.
The same dark roast, one splash of milk, lukewarm by the second sip. The same playlist titled “Workout Jams” at the gym. The same gray stretch of highway. The same voices on the same scheduled calls.
I’ve honed that rhythm until it’s flawless.
I didn’t even notice it happening. It felt like structure. Like I had my life… together. But looking back at the last decade, the days blur, moments occur, a constant low hum whir. I worry about what I’ve chosen to .. defer.
Everything feels… fine. Not amazing. Not horrible. Just a flat… line. A hum without a melody.
My routines. My rituals. Stable? Yes. Yet, my curiosity is silent. My world has shrunk to the size of a monitor.
I have confided myself to the same spaces until they felt liminal – like waiting rooms for a life that was happening elsewhere.
Same room. Same streets. Same faces.
I don’t notice the cage until I step out of it.
That’s why travel always hit me so hard. Distance forces clarity. It shakes me awake. I am sleepwalking. All those choices made to build repetition, and how, in little ways, I’ve stopped yourself from trying.
Travel shows me the wonderful world outside the one I created. Yet, vacations never last.
Eventually, I have to pack the bag. I have to come home. Sometimes, the routine itself is the siren’s call – luring me back to the safety of the known. I adopt a few changes, place a souvenir on the shelf, and then the cycle repeatsI
So, I decided to break the cycle.
Two weeks ago, we pressed pause. A gap year. No work. No commute. Just me, my wife, and my son.
It’s been two weeks into this experiment, and I am breathing, at times hyperventilating but even then it’s fun. I don’t think I could have penned this without the silence – without the time to simply pause.
it doesn’t have to be black-and-white thinking. I realize that I don’t have to be in a novel place to change my perspective.
I don’t need a plane ticket to escape. All I need to do is shuffle my feet, crouch down, or stand on my tiptoes to look at what I am doing from a different angle.
The grass isn’t greener on the other side. It’s greener where you care for it – water it, patch it and give it sunlight. Even the most magical, inspiring place I’ve visited is “the boring backyard” of another person’s life.
So, I want to see the world. But, I also want to capture the adventure right here. To bring back spontaneity. To do something different.
It brings a smile back to my face. Every day felt new when I was a kid. I didn’t need to change homes; I just looked at the world with hungry eyes.
I am excited to see what this year will bring. I certainly intend to explore more of the beautiful world out there with my family. But I know I cannot find the answer only there.
Because I want to widen the aperture of the world I’ve created. And the answer is inside of me, refusing to narrow it again.
Spontaneity is enriching. It’s accessible. And for the first time in a long time, it’s under my control.
Just a new perspective.

Well, next week is going to be a blur. Helping support a damage assessment, speaking on a wildfire panel at a utility conference, and making a trip to see some family after a crisis.
Glad that we have some mild weather compared to what could hit the East, but I would do unmentionable things to get some snow out here.

When you start to think of the fallout of all this, various U.S. sectors are going to be hit HARD, it's going to cost the U.S. _BIG_ in terms of money. For instance, 'Hollywood' and movie-making will not be the same after this for the sheer fact that NO ONE on the planet will want to sit through a pedantic 'superhero' movie anymore where the americans are always portrayed as *the good guys*, and that might sound small and insignificant, but, in that sector alone the U.S. will lose between $50-$640billion per year now, including commissions from pre-existing media falling too, and it's not something they can "steal" from other countries either..
Not to mention of course they're cutting their own neck by bailing out of NATO/UN groups which they previously had power in, leaving those groups free to actually fulfill their charter & purpose now without U.S. interference..
The U.S. had to fall sooner or later, and we're witnessing it live, right now.
