  2. With #ANZACDay 2026 disappearing I was surprised by having a mention of the Mucky Duck Bush Band flit across my path, which had me wondering where a sallow youth who'd played Heart Like A Wheel at the Stables folk night on the steep Malcolm Street in Perth had got to.
Discovered that he died in 2025, though the band lives on. And found a vid.
(NYEs with Mucky Duck at Rosalie were good fun.)

  9. Today, #AnzacDay, seems like a good day to revisit Eric Bogle's song "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda." It's been recorded by Bogle himself, and the Pogues, and about a million other people, but to me, this will always be the One True Version of this towering #folkmusic classic.

  13. “The truth is that Gallipoli was shocking for us,.....Dragged into service by the imperial government in an ill-conceived and poorly executed campaign, we were cut to ribbons and dispatched -- and none of it in the defence of Australia.

Without seeking to simplify the then bonds of empire and the implicit sense of obligation, or to diminish the bravery of our own men, we still go on as though the nation was born again or even was redeemed there -- an utter and complete nonsense." - Paul John Keating
