  1. Each ANZAC day, I try to reflect on how war has affected my family and ancestors.

This time, I've chosen William Curtius - also known as Wilhelm Kurtz, Ritter Johann Wilhelm von Curti, Wilhelm di Curti, Sir William Curtius FRS of Sweden.

  2. Canadian-born, 21-year-old Bill Millin, the Mad Piper of the D-Day landing.

Played his bagpipes for his comrades in the HLI Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders No. 4 Commandos at Pegasus Bridge at the command of his superior officer, Commander Lord Lovat.

‘Millin played "Highland Laddie", "The Road to the Isles", and "All The Blue Bonnets Are Over the Border" as his comrades fell around him on Sword Beach. Millin stated that he later talked to captured German snipers who claimed they did not shoot at him because they thought he had gone mad.’

  4. Always poignant if you tour through wee villages in north-east #Scotland like the ones on the route the Queen's coffin took from #Balmoral you find all the memorials to their war dead. Some are stone monuments, others quiet plaques on hall/church walls. The loss disproportionately affected these rural areas as a significant percentage of menfolk never returned.
