Beware of Mastodon account verification scams!

Recently, an incident that talked about the Mastodon account needing verification has happened! A scam attempt was made to lots of users in Mastodon, and it looks like that there is a bot that attempted to create lots of spam Mastodon accounts that urge users to “verify their account using the link written in the message.”

We recommend that you NEVER click on the link, and to report those accounts as spam to minimize the risk. The official Mastodon staff will NEVER ask for your credit card information, password, username, or any other such information like that.

When we posted a link to our most recent article to Mastodon using WordPress Jetpack, we found a very unusual message coming from “Mastodon” telling us that we need to verify our account. This was sent to us as an e-mail from WordPress, a blogging provider we use:

The content went as follows:

@<MASTODON_HANDLE> Hello,

Our system indicates your account remains unverified. To maintain full access with our updated policies, please complete a quick verification using the link below:

🔗 https :// mastodon [DOT] netprocesse [DOT] com [SLASH] mx [SLASH] x [SLASH] <RANDOM_NUMBER>

This will only take about a minute. Unverified accounts might be temporarily restricted.

The “netprocesse” link is NOT a real Mastodon link!

When we searched Google for this host name, we saw lots of references to it in the search results:

For those who are curious, when we curiously went to the link, it showed us the “Account verification” page that told us to select a payment method, with the VISA/MASTERCARD/American Express as the option:

The typos are very obvious, as “Mastadont” and “verif” are on the same page, which makes the whole page look fishy. When we pressed “Proceed to verification”, we’re prompted to give credit card information, like below:

If you then went ahead to provide the credit card information, the attacker behind the phishing scam attempt will obtain your valid credit card information, which will cause your card to be charged fraudulently.

So, we urge users not to click on the link and to report such messages to the Mastodon team for analysis. In our case, the “scam” message, which was a reply to our most recent blog post on Mastodon, was deleted automatically, so we’re unaffected by this scam attempt.

Any other suspect “Mastodon” accounts must be immediately reported to the administrators to lower the risk of phishing scams.
