  1. A little Memorial Day paddle in the Tampa Bypass Canal on my new collapsible Oru kayak. Although we are still very much in a drought, the evening rainstorms the past two weeks have helped tremendously in restoring the green in the grass. I only saw one alligator throughout the entire two-hour paddle.

  7. RE: nerdculture.de/@rattlesnakestu

I introduced myself to the #fediverse 5 years ago today.

A lot has happened in the past 5 years, for me personally and in the world. I now live in the opposite corner of the continental US, and I work for a different employer - and from home instead of at a warehouse. I've also published more novels since then.

Allow me to re-introduce myself, as I am now in 2026, by way of a hash of hashtags:

    I'm a #writer #photographer and #developer interested in #writing #reading #3dprinting #3dmodeling #bbs #retrotech #retrocomputing #php #codeigniter #indie #publishing #tabletopgaming #hiking #kayaking and so much more.

  12. Gearlab has produced a Deception Pass edition of the Kalleq. Thankfully, I already have way too many paddles.

  13. After that, it’s a rather technical river. Lots of places where you go into an eddy, map out the line for the next 50m or so, run it as best you can, and then repeat the process.

In between, there’s several quiet spots where you can just look up at the lush greenery hanging over the water, down the cliffs that frequently line the river.

Nothing really dangerous in there, but you do need to pay attention. Wouldn’t go there with beginners.

  18. I want to talk about the Koritnica a bit more, because it’s probably my favorite river.

It doesn’t always have enough water to run, so when it does, it feels like a gift. It’s roughly grade III, so medium difficulty.

Right after putting in, you go through a small gorge: youtube.com/shorts/YohJh2h-5NU it’s quite a special experience (especially if you flip…)

  23. Back at camp, after a good three hours on the water.
Shorter than usual, but it was COLD 🥶

I still gave it all I had. My head was doing well today, and I pushed myself hard. Some stuff worked, some didn’t - but at least I know why.

Had one risky moment where I flipped, didn’t manage to roll quickly, hit a few stones in flat water, but eventually managed to get myself upright again. Thanks, helmet! 🪖😵‍💫

  28. @slothrop anyway, to answer the question, even though I have a pretty solid routine for packing my gear, I sometimes end up having to wear my paddle float on my head for sun protection

  33. A question to more experienced kayakers:

Is there ever a point where, just before setting out from home / camp, you stop asking “did I really pack my spray deck?”

  38. Quite unusually, we actually stuck to the plan. I had an early start to the day. My group members loaded
their gear into my car, I left camp at 7:45, drove into town, and had the best breakfast of the week avocado toast with beetroot hummus 😋

Then some waiting, some driving, and we actually got on the water by 1pm. Focused practice for a couple of moves, and then a fairly relaxed guided run through the “graveyard” section, which went well.

    Now I’m tired… 🥱

  43. Tomorrow we’ll get up early, because the road out from the campsite will be blocked for works starting at 8am 🫩

We’ll do the Srpenica - Trnovo section of the Soča, which the Germans know as “the graveyard”. Not because it’s particularly dangerous, but because you get out near a graveyard.

Still, it’s a more challenging section than what we’ve had so far, and one of Europe’s classic runs. I look forward to paddling there again!

  48. Today is break day on the kayak course. The road out from the campground is blocked for resurfacing, and there’s thunderstorms predicted.

We’d happily paddle in the rain, since we get wet anyway, but lightning strikes are a risk when you’re the highest thing on a flat water surface.
