Fun weekend testing sea kayaks in cold, windy (sleety, haily) Argyll.
It was good to test them in challenging conditions, but I noted how the weather improved as soon as I was off the water.I’ve narrowed the field, but haven’t made my selection yet. Might need a longer test of the 2 contenders.

Last summer I learned do the sweep roll on a kayak... but only on one side. When I'd attempt it on the other side, I'd feel a mysterious pain in the forearm.
Last night I went to a practice session at a swimming pool and I was able to roll the kayak both sides!
No sign of the pain. Not sure what has happened in between, but great to have progress in any case.

Yesterday I got to practice kayak self-rescue and rolling in 10 m/s wind and half-meter waves at the #merimelojat/HeMe/DK rescue camp. It's great to get some practice in the kind of conditions where you might actually accidentally fall over.
To my surprise, it went really well. I've learned to roll only this summer and I thought I'd simply fail, but all my attempts succeeded. #seakayaking

This is my favorite sea kayak: Lettman Skinner.
It's long and narrow, which makes it go fast. The pointy bow shape makes it fast even when the sea is a bit choppy. Nevertheless it manages to be fairly agile. It has low volume, which means isn't wind doesn't easily turn it (i.e. little weathercocking).
Great for evening paddles, although for expeditions you'd want more space.

Nog wat foto's van de Surfski-Battle van Surfski-Holland dit weekend, met/tegen clubmaatjes van KVKeistad en andere racers uit NL en Be/ZA. Eerste race op zee met wat serieuzere golven. 2x terug in de boot geklommen, als laatste gefinisht maar al heel tevreden dat ik de finish haalde. Geweldige ervaring en veel geleerd. Blijven trainen en op naar de volgende!

A friend and I have discovered a mutual love of sea kayaking and want to train for a short excursion next summer and a much more challenging one in a couple of years.Any advice?
