  1. Happy Carday

My car is a year old. Or maybe not because I’m not sure if a car’s birthday is the day is was manufactured, or the day it arrived at the dealership, or the day I went out and picked it up. You can see I don’t know much about car birthdays.

Its birthday (by my definition which is the day I picked it up) was actually yesterday and we went out and celebrated by driving to the park. We got there and I turned it off and opened the door and it told me it didn’t want me to get out and walk and I told it that it was the park and it said to me, “Yes, but it’s my birthday (by your definition) and I don’t want to be left alone in the parking lot with a bunch of scary cars.”

“They’re just cars,” I said. “They’re not scary.”

“Says someone who isn’t a car.”

My car and I, we apparently have a lot in common.

“Well, what can I do about—”

“You can just stay with me.”

So I sat and read and looked out at trees periodically and the car sat and rested. Or whatever cars do when they’re turned off. Except for the tires and the windshield wipers the thing is pretty much one giant computer so for all I know it rests by examining and evaluating my driving habits and radio preferences and my inability to sing and uploads all that information somewhere.

We get along alright. It’s a Scorpio like me and I suspect that’s the reason why. And why we both like it when I drive through puddles. It’s surprising to me how many miles I don’t drive anymore since I don’t go to work every day. I should probably get out more. Go to a grocery store farther away. Travel. Maybe go to St. Paul or something.

    Car:

Please don’t anyone tell my car that I thought of a song about an Oldsmobile, but I don’t know of any songs about Toyotas.

  2. Microsoft software is bad enough as it is. Now imagine what will happen to it when potentially 60,000 people leave the company. Most larger enterprise customers will be generally okay, but all of those small to medium sized non-profits, charities, etc that use Microsoft products because they don't have a proper IT department and don't know any better will start to feel the pain of even worse software.

Now, more than ever, these smaller places need open source and Linux/BSD alternatives.

  3. Why is Gaza isolated from the rest of the world? 💔
More than two million people are struggling to survive, with countless families displaced and living in tents, uncertain of what tomorrow will bring.
We are human beings. We have dreams, families, and the right to live in peace. Why must our lives be filled with so much suffering? All we ask for is a safe home, food, water, and a future. Please, don’t forget us. 🇵🇸💔

  4. How do I tell my elderly parents that I have nothing left to give them? We are in Gaza, struggling to find food, and I can barely meet my mother’s medical needs. Every day, I fear what tomorrow will bring. Please don’t let our suffering go unnoticed. Your small donation could mean a meal, medicine, and a little hope for my family. 🙏

"Orwellian arguments, fuzzy math and a hippie cult: This is the dawning of the S.F. midterm election

Mayor Lurie’s arguments have grown Orwellian and his math isn’t mathing. But it’s hard to foresee voters denying him anything he asks for.

Like you, I was surprised when a political advertisement depicting nine berobed, hairy people (and a cat) was crammed through my mail slot. 'No one knows better than SF,' the mailer read, 'Communes just don’t work.' It then exhorted us to vote 'Yes' on Prop. C and 'No' on Prop I in the November election.

Sorry, what? If this is a Jonestown reference, the 'commune' part of that arrangement was the least of everyone’s worries. What does a group of people who look like the second-run traveling cast of 'Jesus Christ Superstar' have to do with the midterm elections? The Prince of Peace, after all, could spring for 12 apostles, not eight.

    (. . .)

That 'right to participate directly and meaningfully,' it seems, is the 'commune' the flyer is warning of — though it also sounds kind of like a suburban HOA or the board elections for your average condo complex. By this measure, the Freedom West co-op, whose redevelopment plan was last week lauded by Prop. I foe Mayor Daniel Lurie, is also a 'commune,' albeit one primarily inhabited by African American seniors and families, not weird hippies with a salad empire."

  6. RE: infosec.exchange/@josephcox/11

I am happy with Posteo for my email.

Email is no secure medium, no matter how many bits you bolt onto the protocol. If you need to communicate confidentially, use Signal, not email.

German police once demanded the IP addresses of Posteo customers and Posteo did not—could not—deliver because they (intentionally) don't even save IP addresses.

If you need your own domain (like [email protected] rather than [email protected]), then I recommend Mailbox.org. Posteo doesn't support custom domains. Mailbox costs 300% of Posteo's price though.

In any case, Proton (via ProtonMail) should not be supported.

  7. So whoever needs to hear this:

The latest "AI" frontier models do NOT generate #accessible web pages.

They will not automate #accessibility testing, cannot take the role of a manual tester, will not magically fix all #accessibility issues on your website and cannot catch accessibility issues for you no matter how strictly you frown at them. What they will do is give you dramatically verbose, overengineered solutions to problems that don't actually exist.

I just tested this today. You still need a human in the loop who knows what they're doing. i'm one of those, happy to help if you pay me tokens. And by tokens I mean fair wages.

Don't get me wrong, I do use #AI for my own projects at times. They just really aren't good at this.

  8. "You have nothing to lose but your chains."

The premier ...doing away with the Indian Act would bring changes, things like treaties and constitutional rights would still be able to exist for First Nations people.
"You can have self-determination, and you can have strong Indigenous nationhood, while at the same time not having the paternalism and the barriers that come with the Indian Act," Kinew said.

  9. The economics of starting a VHS distribution label almost make sense, really, and I bet I know enough weirdos from the #monsterdon community and associated communities that I could find some folks who would be pretty damn excited about the obscure releases we could put out.

Maybe offer a USB Video Disc option for people who don't want a VHS (and a como USB/VHS pack for people who want the tape but also want the good looking copy?)

Between films that are unambiguously in the US public domain and films that are *probably* in the US public domain, but nobody has been able to prove it one way or the other, I could easily put together a few dozen obscure releases that most folks haven't seen.

And that's without getting into the indie filmmakers I know who would probably want in.

  10. “In fact there’s a brilliant study that was done by these two guys at Harvard, who are the furthest thing from conservatives—they’re in fact self-identified socialists. And they make this argument that, around the world, levels of police brutality are highest in places where police are fewest. . . A fundamental insight that made me really rethink a lot of what I thought about crime.”

[In addition to this point being entirely unsubstantiated and factually untrue, Gladwell attempts to explain the false claim with contrarian guesswork, again with no evidence supporting it, about how when there are more cops, perhaps police don’t need to use as much brutality and violence and so are nicer.]

  11. @lrz I plan to write a 🧵in a few days.

For the hw, what I find good is responsiveness of the gorilla glass. And TOH concept that could open a lot of possibilities for extensions. For now I only have a blue half to put instead of my orange (a complimentary gift for batch 3 pre-orders), but who knows if they'll make some more exciting components in future.

What I don't like: the size, as I prefer smaller phones, and the lack of a headphones port.

  12. The mobilization that started after losing the 1st round of the elections is something I’d never seen before in Brazil and something I think none of us could have expected.

It gave me hope that not only we could turn things around but also that the left becomes more united in the future, because we’re definitely gonna need it.

If you’re not from Brazil and don’t really understand the effort that went behind the left finally dominating social media, this article (in English) gives a good overview imo

  14. Time for another slice of life from the Loving series with “Too Close to Ignore” by M.A. Innes. #GayRomance #MMRomance #GayBookReviews

The guys are taking a short vacation together, just the four of them. It should give them some time to relax and maybe work out the shifting boundaries of their relationship. It seems that at least some of them need more than they’re getting from their “secondary partners” but they don’t want to push for more than the other is willing to give. First, though, they have to survive whatever craziness Kevin instigates.

🆘 Please, don’t let their cries go unheard. Help us find bread before another night of hunger. Even sharing this post could save us. 🇵🇸💔

  16. I ordered a hardware random number generator from the US (I'd have preferred the UK or EU but couldn't find the right product).

So far the only thing random about it is the delivery path. It's going all over the US and just sitting in depots.

Americans pride themselves on their commerce abilities but they don't seem able to ship much outside their country.

Three weeks so far. I have a project launch waiting on this.

  19. “Over the years, we have gotten very used to getting bizarre emails from sources. Many allege to have uncovered some sort of CIA conspiracy, or suggest that they are being tracked by the government. Many of these emails are long and meandering, are sent to dozens of email addresses at once, and generally make no sense. The emails we’ve been getting recently aren’t like that. They are emailing us specifically because they have a tech problem, don’t know where to turn, and ChatGPT is telling them to contact us, is writing the email for them, and is compiling ‘evidence packets,’ ‘forensic trails,’ ‘evidence dossiers,’ ‘original correspondence,’ a ‘bounded set of primary records,’ and a series of questions we are supposed to investigate.”

  20. Right. It's still my birthday for a few hours, so I'm going to ignore the internet entirely and postpone anxiety and dread related to Anthropic's IPO till tomorrow.

(last week was worst workweek in at least five years; and if I don't unplug from tech news entirely, this will probably be the worst week off.)

  21. Got my first credit card chargeback for the online order I processed on Saturday. And I rushed the order and shipped with Priority Mail at my expense! I've got plenty of evidence to prove the charge is legit. I hope the bank and Square don’t screw this up. It’s $85.

  22. Hm, this "rock guitar masterclass" book has too many errors, and too much classical fiddling (i.e. Bach...) without any purpose except for finger practice. Feels like straight out the 80s, aka "become a shredder...", and probably is.

I don't care very much for playing like Malmsteen etc., so I'll see if it gets better, and drop out if it won't.

  24. Good morning Japan

Tokyo, I struggle, I complain, I’m never in sync with the rhythm…

And there’s this feeling that reality is slipping away from me, that I’m becoming a machine pitted against the machine. Only when I got home did I realise that perhaps this was my subject all along: not Japan itself, which I don’t really understand, but the distance between me and its people, the gap between two cultures.

  27. Early 3D adventure games on 80s tech: The Freescape games

As I look more into old computer gaming, everything that turns up from the British computer market seems to just be the coolest thing I've ever seen. Many are probably familiar with Elite, which was already revolutionary with its early 3D spacetrader gameplay. But one British company, Incentive Software, released a string of fully 3D, first person adventure puzzle games in the late 80s, for both 8-bit and 16-bit computers, and I don't know how I hadn't heard of it sooner.

It was done using their specially-made "Freescape" engine, one of the earliest examples of such in the field, and a name proudly flaunted on the box of each game. There were 6 such Freescape games released between 1987 and 1990, each made of rooms filled with simple 3D shapes and interactive puzzles, and they're all quite a trip to play.

Here are some screencaps of the third and fourth, "Total Eclipse" from 1988, and its 1989 sequel "Sphinx Jinx". Chosen simply just because you're an archaeologist in the 1930s exploring a pyramid to stop a pharaoh's curse, and I love temples and deserts.

You're equipped with a pistol and a constantly-draining bottle of water (and in the 16-bit versions, a flashlight as well), and your health is represented by a heartbeat-ometer. You have to face mummies, illusory rooms, and a limited amount of total keys, so multiple playthroughs and mapping the pyramid out on paper are required to find the correct path.

Because the IBM PCs hadn't caught on in the UK as much as they had in the US at this time, the DOS versions of these games was on par with the 8-bit ports, limited to only 16-color EGA graphics. So, for completion's sake, I got an Amiga emulator running to experience the game for a second time.

The sequel, Sphinx Jinx, was only available bundled with the first as part of a "Special Pack" that was only released for the 8-bit computers, and never saw the PC, Atari ST, or Amiga. So, I set up a Commodore 64 emulator, too.

However, it runs pretty damn slowly, and it's supposed to be the hardest of all the Freescape games, so it's a bit of a slough. Luckily, ScummVM recently added support for all the Freescape releases, so they all can be ran natively with higher resolution and WASD+mouse controls.

For a lot more information and screenshots of each Freescape game, here's a set of great blog posts: https://hg101.kontek.net/freescape/freescape.htm
