  1. Writers, and readers, I hope you'll say hello to the wonderful @catvalente who not only authored one of my favourite #middlegrade books ever (The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making), but also writes adult #scifi, short stories, etc, including the wonderfully bonkers #SpaceOpera...love that tagline.

Anyway, she's on #Mastodon so give her a big wave.

  2. Shout out to Steve Herman using #Mastodon to post in real time about #PresidentZelenskyy's visit to the #WhiteHouse. He captured the moment Zelenskyy presented a battle flag from #Ukrainian heroes to Congress, and
in exchange was presented with an American flag that was flown over the Capitol in his honor. See Steve's coverage from yesterday here journa.host/@w7voa/10955463678

  3. I've only just remembered that, growing up in Massachusetts, our English classes were called "language arts." I've been thinking about whether, as a fiction writer, I'm in the arts, and this reminds me that I am, at least for a few hours in the morning.

  4. Writers, how do you rewrite? Open the file on your computer and edit the previous draft? I feel like I'm the only one who starts with a blank screen. I keep a printout of the last draft by me but only glance at it. I'm afraid of the lure of a previous well-made sentence. I need to enter the scene again as if this combo of internal and external factors were hitting my character for the first time. What do you do?

  6. Today I have for you the joyous iris reticulata with the stems of cornus alba Sibirica. I took this picture on the 26th of February last year. My big goal with developing the new, "winter" part of the garden is to get this kind of colour early in February, January if I can manage it.

  10. @geekaren @bookstodon I know I always talk about this book, but WHEN YOU REACH ME by #RebeccaStead ... feels like gorgeous historical middle grade set in the 1970s but is actually stealth #scifi

  11. @wendypalmer @bookstodon for a 12-year old who loves mysteries, #JamesPonti has the wonderful CITY SPIES series with a bunch of 13-ish-year old international spies. He might like WHEN YOU REACH ME by #RebeccaStead too, and ORPHANS OF THE TIDE by #StruanMurray also great (though contains some magic.) Maybe #librarians #schoollibrarians can suggest others?

  16. @vkfarfalle @bookstodon that's an interesting problem and I suffer from the same thing when it comes to my settings – "I can't picture this" is feedback I sometimes get from early readers. If it's any use I really got a handle on plotting through Plot and Structure by #JamesScottBell and Screenplay by #SydField.

  17. I'm encountering the same scary thing in my current total rewrite of my work in progress: characters are being left on the cutting room floor. It's fine, I know it's going to be fine, because I've done this before.

Have you ever cut or been advised to cut characters? Did you do it? Why or why not?

  22. I discovered that when I cut characters, it makes the other relationships so much clearer, but also more precious. I write #middlegrade, so I don't want to have a cast of thousands when my reader could be between 8 and 12 years old.
