  1. A super "Science Behind the Fiction" event at #PortobelloBookFestival with #DougJohnstone (THE SPACE BETWEEN US) and myself talking about FRIEND ME.

We chatted about writing sci-fi proudly, how other writing like journalism affects our fiction, and the joys & terrors of Enceladus and AI. Thrilled to hear the sequel to Doug's book is out next march. Sci-fi forever!

The morning glory on ivy combo is gonna work so well: the rather young morning glory in a pot near an ivy covered wall has already climbed to nearly 2 m. Come springtime, and I will sow most of my morning glory seeds under the ivy. 😍

I am also a big fan of this plant. 😻

This year I found out that although the plants will die away during the winter, their seeds are frost hardy (at least down to −6°C). So come the spring and I will sow a lot of morning glories at the foot of a long ivy covered wall in my garden, in the hope that the glories will use the ivy as kind of a live trellis support and make the ivy more colourful during the summer. And if this works, I hope the seeds will germinate the year after and perpetuate the cycle.

Anyone here who have tried this?

  10. Lily Empress is not at all shy: look at those layers of petals. The perfume is a garden-filling knockout of a fragrance. Like Anouska that I showed you the other day, this is a roselily, and it's my first year growing them. Here with the Barbie pink phlox and magenta lychis coronaria.

  11. Morning glory Grandpa Otts: this electric beauty surprises me every morning as its trumpets open at different places on the vine. I managed to keep the slugs off (garlic spray!) when they were babies, so now about a dozen plants are climbing through the August garden. Each flower opens for just one day. But what a day.

  12. Today for you I have the indescribable #lily Anouska, a fragrant double form that looks like a lotus before it opens fully to show its stamens. Until this year I've never grown one of these double doubles, which are known as roselilies, and I've been waiting for this day. It's a stunner and I'll be growing it again. Mainly I garden for fragrance, and this has a fresh, gorgeous floral scent that doesn't overwhelm.

  13. The raspberry-red clematis on the left is Madame Julia Correvon, destroyed by the builders two years ago, or so I thought. It resprouted from below ground this spring. Here with a basket of petunias and the now-complete rose arch, with the twin ramblers Princesse Louise.

  14. When I'm working on a manuscript, the home stretch of line edits before submitting it is a crucial phase. Here's a thing I do, inspired by the revision tips given to me years ago by the brilliant Sara Grant.

What do you do in the last moments before submitting your manuscript ?

  18. The wall fountain corner, with double pink tulip Columbus and forget-me-nots. In the #Netherlands I used to admire how people put pots and baskets of spring flowers onto outdoor tables, and I always wanted to be that organised. I only put this container together in January, but it's still performing and giving me joy.

  19. The pond corner. The barrel will hold #peas later, but now it's #tulips (starring the double orange Orca), plus purple honesty that I dug up from where it had self-seeded. Behind it, #hellebores obscure the tiny pond, which is tucked into the corner and supports a few #frogs and #newts. A neighbor offered me her Victorian fireplace surround so I put it here with a mirror tucked behind, a trick from garden designer Mirabel Osler.

  20. I love when #gardeners show a wide shot of their spaces, so here's our courtyard outside the kitchen window, taken yesterday. The fan trained peach grows in the bed at the right, under-planted with spring bulbs. Climbing #hydrangea and #clematis Polish Spirit will cover the trellis later. Beneath them are things that have finished flowering like #crocus and #hellebores, plus a carpet of lily of the valley that's about to burst open.

  21. This is a gorgeous Purple Prince tulip that I think is developing a breaking virus, causing the white and pink feathering, but I love it. Planted with a handful of hyacinths plus forget-me-nots under the old peach tree at the side of our tiny courtyard.

  23. You've read about #chatGPT's mixing fact& fiction in that WaPo piece by Pranshu Verma & @willoremus, I hope? Educate yourself about the confident statement of untruths that's rife in ChatGPT. When I questioned the thing about why it asserted untruths, it humbly agreed with me that it needed to change its ways. I blogged about it here >>

  27. Standing room only last night at launch of Justin Davies's #middleGrade adventure #HAARVILLE (Floris Books). So interesting to hear where the concept for this spooky, foggy seaside story came from. Coming to the #US this summer! The publisher and @TheEdinburghBookshop did a beautiful job hosting the event & I got to catch up with so many #kidlit pals.
