  2. You can observe the moving of goalposts that seems to be a constant when dealing with and coding, right now:

We went from “llms can’t find real bugs, just a hallucinated mess” to “llms can find valid bugs but are not able to construct exploitation paths” to “llms can find real security issues and constructs exploitation chains, but they’re not real security bugs exploitable at large” to “some are real and exploitable, but you need xyz to do it” within like, a year.

Predicted trajectory “some are real and exploitable but you need knowledge to properly prompt the llm” to “security is not about finding exploitable bugs” to “why are all the techbros suddenly rushing into software security” to “we are banning all llm based security tooling”.

Maybe you are not yet used to this cycle, but this hopefully explains why some of the voices much less invested in the hype are genuinely worried, and the mythos announcement is just the opportunity to have a wider discussion. Mythos is hype yes, the problem was already here and won’t go away even if mythos is a “dud”. The scary part is the trajectory.

  9. Python Backdoor Threat Analysis Following an AI Deepfake Impersonation Campaign

A sophisticated campaign linked to APT37 delivers Python-based backdoors through spear-phishing emails containing malicious LNK files disguised as legitimate documents. Attackers use themes including airline e-tickets, North Korea research invitations, and impersonation of defense and police officials to induce execution. The LNK files employ environment variable-based obfuscation techniques to download additional BAT files, which establish a Python runtime environment and execute compiled Python bytecode disguised with .cat extensions. The malware functions as a remote command execution backdoor, communicating with C2 servers to receive commands and exfiltrate results. Persistence is maintained through scheduled tasks executing at one-minute intervals. The campaign shows strong tactical similarities to previous APT37 operations, including infrastructure patterns, script obfuscation methods, and the abuse of legitimate tools.

  15. it's kind of hard to believe MS could once make software that not only didn't use ALL of your RAM, it was properly optimized (you had 512k in this system, and Excel ran in that, and you could actually make a spreadsheet with Excel and System software running!)

Excel and the rest of Office today is a greasy pig covered in AI slop lipstick. The Office old guard is disappointed.

  25. Free software isn't "failing" because people can't modify the code. The rest of the system is failing free software because it's trying to hide complexity behind enshittification, and gatekeeping the knowledge of the software craft.

I once wanted to be a programmer, but quickly discovered that I just had no mental capacity for putting up with what looked like intentionally manufactured barriers and other bullshit. (And then I discovered that's how employment is; it's been a slog since)
